Gene Ferguson to celebrate 100th
Eugene 0. (Gene) Ferguson, a
resident of Morrow County and
Heppner for many years, is
celebrating his 100th birthday at
Blue Lake Park in Troutdale on
August 8, 1998.
The family has reserved area K-
17 at the park for the entire day
and welcomes friends of Gene.
Anyone who can stop by for a
visit is invited to do so. The
family says that Gene will be
pleased to see friends from
Heppner and Morrow County.
Gene was bom August 8, 1898,
in Quinlan, Woodward County,
Oklahoma Territory. (Oklahoma
did not become a state until
November 16, 1907, the 46th
state to be approved by
Congress.) The family lived on a
homestead in Woodward County
for several years after Gene was
bom.
Gene's parents first moved with
their family to Lexington in
1905, stayed there a year and
then moved to Lebanon and
stayed there for two or three
years, moving back to Quinlan,
Oklahoma, in 1909-1910. In the
Spring of 1915 they returned to
OregQn, moving to Lakeview.
In the spring of 1917 they
moved to Heppner. Shortly
thereafter Gene’s father, O.T.
Ferguson, leased a farm in
Blackhorse
Canyon,
near
Heppner. In 1919, O.T. bought
the lower part of the W.G.
McCarty farm in Sand Hollow
and leased the remainder of the
farm.
After working for about five
years on ranches around
Heppner, Gene met Fay Heiny in
the fall of 1922.
Fay was
teaching at Social Ridge school
south of Lexington at that time.
They married on June 17, 1923,
and remained married until Fay
died on February 3, 1996, in
Beaverton.
In 1924, Gene quit farming.
He then traded for and bought
from Ed Clark the first service
station in Heppner. In 1926 he
and his father built what became
Ferguson Brothers Garage on the
southwest comer of Main and
May Streets. He and his brother,
Ray, ran the garage until 1944,
when they sold it.
In 1928 Gene and his father left
Ray to run the garage and moved
to Pendleton to open an agency
to
sell
Oakland
Pontiac
automobiles; this proved to be a
poor decision and they sold it in
the fall of 1928.
Gene and Ray bought the farm
in Sand Hollow from their father,
and ran it until they divided it in
about 1950. Gene sold his share
o f the farm to Kenneth and Jean
Ann Turner in 1976.
Gene was a 50-year member of
Elks Lodge 358, retaining his
membership when he left
Heppner. He also served as a
Morrow County Commissioner
for eight years.
In 1972, after living in Heppner
for about 55 years, Gene and Fay
moved to Hermiston. They lived
there for over 20 years, moving
to the Portland area in about
1993. After Fay died. Gene lived
with one of his grandchildren in
Hermiston, then moved to Gold
Beach where he lives with his
son, Ted. In January of this year,
he had the bad fortune to fall and
break his hip and has had hip
surgery to repair that.
"He
certainly is not in as good health
as he was 50 years ago, but keeps
on
moving,"
says
Dick
Ferguson." His dream is to live
in three centuries. He was bom
August 8, 1898, has lived
through most of the 1900's, and
hopes to live until the start of the
twenty-first century.
Gene's address, for anyone
wishing to write, is: P.O. Box
