OTPR plans 76th annual celebration

This year a big red, white and
blue 76th celebration is planned
for the Professional Rodeo
Cbwboy Association (PRCA)
shows in Heppner.
The Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo
will bring all the fast action
events the crowd loves such as
bull-riding, barrel racing, calf
roping, team roping, steer
wrestling, saddle bronc riding,
bareback riding and the popular
mutton bustin'.
This year's stock will be
provided by Big Bend Rodeo
Company.
They will be
providing both the 1997 Bucking
Horse of the year, Skoal’s Spring
Fling, and the bull of the year,
Rapid Fire. Two of the sponsors
of the Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo,
Bank of Eastern Oregon and Les
Schw ab Tire Center of Heppner,
are each putting a $250 bounty
up to the cowboy who draws and
rides the bounty animal. The
Bank of Eastern Oregon is
putting a $250 bounty up for both
the saddle bronc and bareback
horse, Les Schwab is putting a
$250 bounty up for the bull.
The announcer this year is
Steve Kenyon, from Adams.
Steve tours the Pacific Northwest
as
a
professional
rodeo
announcer. The bullfighters w'lll
be Danny Newman and Tim
Vredenburg for the 1998 rodeo
and entertaining the fans this
year will be the famous Bert
Davis from Copperopolis, CA.
Bert is known for his comical
and spectacular animal acts and
he has won numerous awards for
his specialty acts which include
dogs, birds and horses.
In conjunction with the pro
rodeo, the town’s county fair will
also be in full swing Aug. 19-23.
The Morrow County Fair/Oregon
Trail Pro Rodeo Queen Macy
Childers, Princess Lindsey Ward
and Princess Bobbie Rankin will
be on hand to assist and greet our
guests. The attractions for the

Lab" (an inflatable space
planetarium). There will be a
classic car show, wine and hors
d'oeuvres
tasting,
live
entertainment
and
singing.
Karaoke, All Alaskan Pig Races,
a teen dance and a Petal Power
Tractor Pulling Contest.
Another added attraction is the
town itself. The entire down
town just completed a multi-
million
dollar
renovation.
Everyone is invited to come see
the new and improved down
town Heppner.
The Heppner Main Street
parade begins on Aug. 22 at 10
a.m. There will be live music
Friday night at the Elk's Lodge
and Karaoke at Bucknum's
Tavern.
Breakfast will be
available both Saturday and
Sunday morning, along with a
walking tour. The Morrow
County Museum will be open,
and tours of the courthouse will
be available. If the weather is
hot, bring your swimming suit
and experience the new public
swimming pool.

The Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo
committee has been working
hard to present a brand new
office and handicap facilities.
The office is on the northeast
side of the arena and the
handicap access will be on the
west side of the grandstands.
The handicap access will begin
by the stairs with an aluminum
ramp which leads to a platform
on a concrete slab near the roping
boxes.
The design of the
facilities will be such that wheel
chair access will be accessible by
simply driving up to the ramp,
and unloading directly onto the
ramp.
The Oregon Trail Pro Rodeo
takes place on Friday Aug. 21, at
7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 22,
at 1: 15 p.m., with slack being
held Friday night following the
performance. Mutton Bustin'
will be held 1/2 hour before the
PRC A Rodeo.
The Morrow
County Jackpot rodeo will also
be held on Sunday, Aug. 23, at
1:15 p.m. for all fans to watch
local Morrow County cowboy
and alumni competitions.
The ticket prices are $8 for
adults and $5 for children seven-
12 years; children six years and
under are free The new stadium
seating will also be available
with chair VIP seating. Ten seats
for three days are available for

Several incidents
occur on Fourth
A 16-year old lone boy was
transported to Pioneer Memorial
Hospital in Heppner after he
allegedly passed out in the yard
of a residence in lone from
drinking alcohol on July 4. The
Heppner Ambulance and the
Morrow County Sheriffs Office
responded.
The youth was cited for minor
in possession of alcohol by
consumption.
Also on July 4, the lone EMTs,
the Heppner Ambulance and the
MCSO responded to a report of a
woman down in front of the stage
at the lone Park around midnight.
In a separate July 4 incident,
the Oregon State Police and
MCSO responded to a report of
six adults who were fighting at
Penland Lake. The six were
reported to have chased everyone
out of the campground at
Penland Lake.

Allstott family plans reunion Additional $100
Descendants of Johann Caspar
Alstadt (1673-1742) through his
eldest son, Johann Martin Alstatt
(1699-1769), have planned a
reunion at the Morrow County
Fairgrounds
in
Heppner,
Saturday July 18, beginning at 9
a.m. A potluck dinner will get
underway at 1 p.m.
Johann Martin Allstatt, his wife
and son came to the U.S. from
Freinsheim, Germany, arriving in
Philadelphia August 17, 1729.
Sixth-generation descendant,
John Wesley Allstott, came to
Morrow County sometime after
1850. He died in 1907 and is
buried in Heppner.
Among his children who lived
in this area were Robert E.
Allstott and R. Dell Allstott.
Ninth and 10th generation
families still make their homes in
Morrow County.
All friends and family are
invited to attend.

Another $100 has been added
to the reward for information
leading to the conviction of
individuals
responsible

vandalizing

High
School June 13.
A private individual, who
wishes to remain anonymous,
donated the additional money to
bring the reward up to $200. The
Morrow County School District
offered the first Sit reward.

June 28 for Florida.
Dave Kendrick, silviculture
staff member, and the Tupper-
based fire crew, consisting of Art
Osmin, Molli Helliwell and
Lewis Monge, left July 7.
One of the Heppner Ranger
District's fire-fighting trucks was
shipped out on a lowboy from
Pendleton July 6 destined for
Florida.
Sheri Gregory from the
Heppner Ranger District office
said that the crew will be in
Florida for at least 21 more days.
She said that the Heppner
Ranger District was assisted by
other districts when fires broke
out here and now our district is
returning the favor by helping
fight the fires in Florida.
She said that there had been
no additional requests for fire
fighting personnel as of Tuesday
morning.
Chris Anthony of Heppner has
also been sent to Florida to help
fight the fires. Anthony, who
works for the Bureau of Land
Management out of Vale, left
Tuesday morning to fly to
Redmond and then to Florida. He
will assist the fire suppression
effort as part of a three-man team
on a heavy truck.

fair registrations are due Friday,
July 24, by 4:30. Registrations
may be turned in at the Morrow
County Extension office, the
Imgon Annex, the Boardman
Pharmacy or by mail.
Late
entries will not be accepted.
4-H Presentations will be on
Wednesday, August 5, at the
Fairgrounds 4-H Annex in
Heppner from 3 to 8. Those
planning to make presentations
must
register
for
the
presentations as well.
