tree Inn (formerly the Red Lion)
outdoor stage, Ben Stillmanjoined
Matt Jepsen at the Oregon East
Symphony (OES) to play at their
free outdoor concert. Matt has
been playing with OES for a year,
but this is Ben’s first time playing
his violin in concert. Ben is the son
of Beri and Susie Stillman of Lex­
ington.
-:- Mr. and Mrs. Bill Taylor of
Baker City visited his parents, Bob
and Luella Taylor on Sunday.
The annual Lexington
grange picnic will be next Sunday
at Cutsforth Cabin in the moun­
tains. There will be a potluck din­
ner and a short business meeting.

A young couple, who decided
to "go it together" in marriage
and in their faith, have taken
their commitment to each other
and to God a step further. Brent
and Jennifer Waldrep, both 25, of
the Portland area, have been
called to lead a fairly new
ministry in Heppner-the Willow
Creek Baptist Church.
Brent, who will be the pastor at
the church, grew up in New
Boston, Texas, a town o f 6,000 in
the northeast comer of the state
where his parents still reside. He
graduated from high school there
and then attended college at
Baylor University in Waco,
Texas. He received a bachelor of
business administration degree in
finance. He then moved to
Portland where he became
employed with Baptist Student
Ministries and worked as a
Baptist student minister at
Portland State University. He has
a sister who graduated from the
Air Force Academy at Colorado
Springs, has a pilot slot and will
be learning to fly.
Jennifer is originally from the
Northwest, living in Washington,
Oregon and Alberta, Canada. Her
father lives in Gresham and she
has a sister, who has two little
boys, who lives in Richland.
Jennifer has a degree in general
studies from PSU.
Brent and Jennifer met while
he was a minister at PSU and she
was a student. The two became
involved in many of the same
activities. Jennifer, who was
working as a bank teller and an
on-call mental health worker in
addition to her studies, had
intended to show Brent around
Portland, but didn't have a lot of
time. Finally, she took him on a
tour of Portland art galleries and
from then on they began seeing
each
other.
He
often
accompanied her on her mental
health job, especially on visits to
the more dangerous areas of
town.
Brent had planned to return to
Texas, but because of their
growing relationship, postponed
his return. He got them both a job
at a Boy Scout summer camp, he
as the chaplain and she as the
rock climbing instructor. The
two, realizing they had many of
the same valves andgoal^, fell in 1
love and were married Dec. «28,
1996.
The couple lived in an
apartment below an assisted
living center and both were
employed providing m-home
health care. Brent also worked
odd jobs and was employed with
UPS. During this time, they were
also very involved in their
church, the Greater Gresham
Baptist Church. Keith Evans, the
pastor there, worked with Brent
in a mentoring relationship and
worship
pastor,
Charlie
Chnsman, worked with Jennifer
in a similar situation.
The pair decided to attend
seminary and enrolled at the
Golden Gate Baptist Theological
Seminary at Vancouver, where
they are still students in the
process of getting their master's
degrees. Brent heard about the
Heppner church through Gary
Benfield, director of missions for
the Baptist churches, whom he
met at a conference in Portland,
Pastor Benfield, who lives in the
Tri-Cities, had been coming to
Heppner to preach at the Willow
Creek Baptist Church each
Sunday afternoon and invited
Brent to preach here.
The Waldreps began coming to
Heppner on weekends to preach
in March and decided to accept
the Heppner ministry, moving
here three weeks ago. "Heppner
is refreshing, said Brent. "People
are very nice and I don't miss the
five o'clock traffic either." "You
have something special here,"
added Jennifer. "We're glad we're
a part of it."
Although the couple are still in
the process of moving in and still
commute to attend seminary
Mondays and Tuesdays of each
week, they "hope to continue
building a church that serves the
community of Heppner and is
relevant to the lives of people,"
said Brent. "Church is not just a
Sunday service, bui a group of
people who celebrate and

respond to what God is doing in
their lives."

now meets in the Seventh-day
