S IX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 3,1998 Fishing derby set at Willow Creek Dam HHS cheerleaders selected for 1998-99 The Kid’s Fishing Tournament is fast approaching. This annual event will again be held at the Willow Creek Reservoir on June 7 from 1-5 pm. Held in conjunction with National Fishing Week and sponsored by the Heppner Ranger District, Lions Club, BASS Club, Oregon Dept, of Fish and Wildlife and Northwest Steelheaders, the derby promises tb be a memorable time for the young and old alike. Youngsters 12 years and under may pre-register at Heppner BMCC concert slated June 6 The BMCC Jazz Ensemble will present their annual spring Concert Saturday, June 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Brownfield Park. In case of inclement weather it will be held at the Pendleton Arts Center. There is no admission charge. The ensemble will feature a wide variety of jazz styles. Soloists for the evening include Brian Adams on trumpet; Aaron Engum, tenor sax; Karen Lange, piano; and Chris Moore on drums. Numbers include Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine"; the classic feature for brushes on the drums, "Cute" by Neal Hefti; Sammy Nestico's "Sam's Boogie"; a popular Duke Ellington standard, "Perdido"; and a rousing finisher by Lennie Niehaus. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and should bring their own fishing poles and tackle. Pop will be provided. Prizes will be donated by local merchants and clubs. Prizes will be awarded to age groups 0-5, 6- 8, 9-10, and 11-12 years old for the biggest fish caught in the bass, trout and sunfish categories. An extra special event is the Zebco Casting Contest, which will take place during the fishing derby. All kids who participate will receive fishing-related material. Local volunteers will be on hand to offer assistance, expertise, and fishing tips.
