RANGER DISTRICT
BULL PRAIRIE
IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS
The Heppner Ranger District
is conducting an environmental
analysis on the proposed Bull
Prairie Improvement Projects.
These projects would be located
within the Bull Prairie Recreation
Facility, Grant County, Oregon,
at T.07S, R.26E., Section 7, W.M.
surveyed. The 134 acre facility
includes a campground, day use
area, man-made 28 acre lake, and
trail.
The District proposes 2 major
improvements and a variety of
smaller projects within the campi-
ground, picnic area, and trail. One
major improvement would in
volve dredging the lake to deeper
than 3 feet around the 4 existing
fishing docks (to alleviate inter
ference from aquatic vegetation)
and improving dock stability. The
second would be removal o f un
healthy trees throughout the en
tire area and grand fir and Dou
glas-fir within ponderosa pine
sites using a team of horses to
minimize soil disturbance. This
would result in 500 ccf of timber,
while unm erchantable trees
would provide firewood for the
campground.
If approved, these projects
would be implemented over a five
year period as money becomes
available. Please contact Lori
Seitz at the address below for a
full project description and maps.
Com m ents regarding this
project must be received by July
6, 1998. W ritten com m ents
should be addressed to Delanne
Ferguson, District Ranger, P.O.
Box 7, Heppner, OR 97836. Oral
comments can be submitted by
telephone at (541) 676-9187.

Service Center, 120 South Main,
Heppner at 7p.m.

Chamber Chatter
By Claudia Hughes. Chamber Manager
Chamber membership is at 70.
New and renewing members help
us to keep marketing our
community, answering hundreds
of phone calls, sending out
brochures and relocate packets,
chainng the parades, attending
meetings, networking, putting on
events and trying to "grow
Heppner." Welcome Sweeney
Mortuary
and
Campbell
Financial Group.
Last week the topic was
commerce
and
diversity.
Diversity includes visitors, and
with summer upon us, we are
about to have many ... BMW
Motorcycles,
Hitchhikers
Northwest
(20-plus
RVers
registered at Willow Lake RV
Park) and many families who
have requested visitor packets.
There will be people coming for
lone's big 4th of July celebration,
the Volkswalk convention in
Pendleton and, of course, fair and
rodeo.
Every visitor gives
Heppner the opportunity to show
off our community, to invite
them to start a business, to
encourage them to return and
bring friends to other events and
activities. "Renew, recreate,
relocate, retire in Heppner."
We certainly aren't a convention
center but we can play off area
conventions by offering side
tours, good food and company.
We can bring boards and
committees here for a day-long
session. Accommodations are
growing with more bed and
breakfast opportunities and
facilities for dining.
"One
county,
many
communities working together
hand in hand." You'll be hearing
more about this theme as the
Morrow County Fair and Oregon
Trail Pro-Rodeo draws near. The
theme lends itself to creative
floats and booths. It's not too
early to plan ahead.
Congratulations
to
our
graduates. The Chamber Board
of Directors has appreciated the
contributions by Josie Proctor
during the year as she served as
the student representative to the
monthly meetings. Jill Barber
will
continue
as
senior
representative, accompanied by
Abby Kahl. We're proud of our
students.
Thought for the week: "What
you value is what you think
about; what you think about is
what you become."
