The Heppner Mustangs and
Pilot Rock Rockets were finally
able to play their rain-delayed
game on Friday, May 15. The
Rockets came out on top, 4-3.
With the win, the Rockets
clinched the top spot in the
Columbia Basin Conference East
Division. The Rockets will play
the number-one team out of the
West Division on Saturday, May
23, at The Dalles at 12 noon.
The Mustangs will play in a
loser-out game against the
number-two team 30 minutes
after game one.
‘ The winner of game two and the
loser of game one will play
following that game to produce
the number-two team out of the
conference to advance to the
state tournament.
The Mustangs had their chances
against the Rockets, outhitting
them 6-5 and stranding 12 men
on base.
The Mustangs jumped out to a
1 -0 lead on their half of the first
inning only to have Pilot Rock tie
after one inning. The Mustangs
took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of
third inning before the Rockets’
Legion,
Auxiliary elect
officers
The American Legion and
Auxiliary will hold a meeting on
Monday, May 25, at 6:30 p.m. at
the United Methodist Church.
Officers were elected on April
26. New officers are as follows:
president - Luella Taylor; vice
president - Rita Hedman;
sergeant-at-arms - Judy Rickert;
chaplain - *Donna McCurdy;
historian - Sharon Brade;
publicity - Sharon Brace; and
public relations - Jem Sly.
The Auxiliary will sell poppies
on May 22.
St. Patrick's Senior Center
Bulletin Board
There were 63 people over 60 and 11 under 60 who attended the
senior dinner May 13 and 21 meals were home delivered.
Members of the Christian Life Center served The Senior Center
Board meeting was postponed to May 20 because of the VA health
screening at the center. A large number of veterans attended that.
Bingo was played in the dining room following the meal. Bingo
is a fiind raiser for the Senior Center. More people are needed to
play.
The menu for the birthday dinner May 27 will be hamburger gravy,
mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, fruit, biscuit and pudding.
Members of the First Christian Church will serve.
The breakfast menu for May 22 is eggs benedict, hot and cold
cereal, fruit, orange juice, milk and coffee.
Tuesday, May 12, seven seniors and driver Gerald Bergstrom
went by bus to the Arlington senior meal site. A delicious dinner
was enjoyed and a great trip home by way of county roads.
The next scheduled bus trip is around Morrow County, May 25, at
10:30 a.m. Those planning to attend should bring a bag lunch. A bus
trip to the Milton-Freewater meal site will be June 5 at 9 a.m. An
AAA meeting will be held at 11 a.m. and dinner will be at noon.
Sign up sheets for both trips are in the Senior Center office.
The seniors were saddened by Martha King's death and extend
sincere condolences to her family. A dinner was held for the family
at the Senior Center following the funeral.

Hellberg - Miles
Mr. and Mrs. Max Hellberg of Imgon announce the engagement
of their daughter, Tnna Lyn Hellberg of Imgon, to Darrell Lee
Miles of Heppner.
The bride-elect graduated from Riverside High School and Eastern
Oregon University with a bachelor's degree in history and secondary
education. She teaches and farms in Imgon.
Miles graduated from Heppner High School and Oregon Institute
of Technology with a bachelor's degree in computer systems
engineering. He is a senior support engineer with NCUBE in
Beaverton.
The couple will be mamed on June<> at Trinity Lutheran Church
in Hermiston.

In the top of the fifth inning the
Mustangs had the bases loaded
but failed to score any runs.
In the top of the sixth, Derek
Gunderson walked, stole second
and went to third on a Shane
Matheny single. Gunderson then
scored on a wild pitch and
Matheny went to third as the
tiemg run with no outs. But
Labrousse pitched out of the jam
and Matheny was stranded at
third.
David Bates started on the
mound for the Mustangs and had
a strong four-plus innings before
giving way to Dylan Pettyjohn.
The Mustangs next played

*1. Celestine Randall
Webb
I. Celestine Randall Webb, 80,
of Heppner, died Tuesday, May
12, 1998, at Pioneer Memorial
Hospital in Heppner.
Graveside services were held
on Saturday, May 16,1998, at the
Hermiston Cemetery.
I. Celestine Pearson was bom
June 10,1917, at Yakima, to John
and Jennie Wood Pearson. She
grew up at Baker City and at­
tended schools there. She lived at
Umatilla, Heppner, Selah and
Carson, Washington, and Union,
then returned to Heppner.
She married Arthur Randall,
who died in 1962.
In 1982, she married William
Webb. Mr. Webb died in 1990.
Mrs. Webb enjoyed music and
crafts.
Survivors include daughters,
Arletha Brannon of Heppner and
Gayle York and Gwen Watson,
both of Payette, Idaho; 10 grand­
children and 10 great-grandchil­
dren. A daughter, Crystal, and a
brother and sister also preceded
her in death.
Memorial contributions may

Martha M. King
Martha *M. King, 82, of
Heppner, died Tuesday, May 12,
1998, at Amber Valley Care Cen­
ter in Pendleton.
Memorial service for Mrs.
King was held Monday, May 18,
1998 at the Heppner Nazarene
Church.
Martha M. Kennedy was bom
May 31, 1915, at Vallhalla, New
York, to William and Noah Hess
Kennedy. She grew up at Delta,
Pennsylvania, and Bethany, Ne­
braska, graduating from Bethany
High School in 1934.
She worked as a cook for the
U.S. Air Force at Lincoln, Ne­
braska, where she met Sylvester
J. Shannon. The couple married
in November 1942. They lived at
Salt Lake City, Utah for a time
and moved to Heppner in 1946.
They later divorced.
On February 14, 1951, she
married Carl F. King at Heppner.
She was employed as a clerk
in a Heppner pharmacy.
Mrs. King was a member of
Degree of Honor and the V.F.W.
Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mary Shannon of Reno, Nevada;
a son, Carl King of Pendleton;
sister, Ilene Hendrickson of
Bethany, Nebraska; brothers,
George Kennedy of Del Ray
Oaks, California, and Pearce
Kennedy of Port Smith, New
Hampshire; three grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Carl, died in 1975.

system will be composed of two
integrated parts, the Emergency
Tone Alert Control System and

Radio/Receiver System. The
system will be composed of up to
17,000 Tone Alert Radios
installed in homes and businesses
in the Immediate Response Zone
surrounding the U.S. Army
Umatilla Chemical Depot, just
west of Hermiston, Oregon. The
alert system will warn the
occupants of buildings in the
vicinity of the Chemical Depot in
the event of a release of chemical
agent from the Depot.
