community and a lot have been
construction
with the co-op for 15-20 years.
My job is just to get everybody
headed in the nght direction." He
also is very appreciative of the
job the MCGG board has done.
"We've always had a very
supportive board of directors."
Mills' last day will be May 30,
but says he will stick around to
help out with the transition to a
new manager. "I'll probably have
some mixed emotions," he said,
"but I'm really looking forward
to it. It's time to move on and do
something else. MCGG is still
growing and it's time for a good
aggressive young guy to take
over. The new guy will do just
great and he's got good people
skills."
Mills said that he and
Betty plan to stay in the
community. "It's treated us well
and there are nice folks in the
community." Of plans for their
retirement, he says that he and
his wife "have grandkids we
want to spoil, travel we want to
do and a few projects we want to
get done." The Mills have a
daughter, Dianne, who lives in
Hermiston with her husband,
Bob, and children, Richard, 23,
James, 18, and Kellie, 15; and a
son, Mike, who lives in Heppner
with his wife, Natalie, and
children, Chloe, three, arid
Chandler, two weeks.
An open house in honor of
the Mills has been scheduled for
Friday, May 29, from 11 a.m. to
3 p.m. at MCGG. Everyone is
invited to stop by and wish them
well.
Former Heppner High School
Mustang Sam Sumner is going to
the NAIA College World Series
with Albertson's College.
The World Series started
Monday, May 18, and goes to
Saturday, May 23, at Tulsa,
Oklahoma.
Albertson's finished the season
with a 51-7 record, including a
29 and 1 record in finishing first
in the Cascade Conference. The
51-7 record is the second best
record in all college baseball.
Albertson's finished the season
ranked fifth in the final poll.
Sumner expected Albertson's to
be the number one or two seed at
the World Series as three of four
teams ranked ahead of them were
beaten at the eight regionals held
around the country.
Albertson's began the Far West
regional by beating Willamette
7-4 and Biola College out of
California, 6-4. They then beat
Lewis and Clark State, 17-7, and
again 51-1 in the championship
game as Albertson's pitcher
threw a one hitter.
The victories over Lewis and
Clark State were especially sweet
for Sumner as he transferred
from there to Albertson's for his
senior year.
Sumner, starting in right field
for the entire year, hit .370 with
nine home runs, 40 RBIs and 11
doubles.

The R & W Reading Program,
jointly supported by the R & W
Drive-In of Heppner and
Heppner Elementary School, has
completed "another successful
year of encouraging students to
read".
"For several years, the various
owners and operators of the R &
W Drive-In have joined with
parents and teachers to encourage
students to read by providing
treats at the Drive-In as a reward
for reaching reading goals. The
early application of reading skills
is crucial to developing literacy,"
said Linda Shaw, HES teacher.
In the past school year, 72
different students in grades one
to four have reached their
reading goals and earned a total
of 162 certificates for treats at
the drive-in. The top readers in
each grade were; first grade-
Maggie
Armato
(seven
certificates); second grade-Kate
Kendrick (12); third grade-Caleb
Maben (six); and fourth grade-
Riley Wight (five).
Kate
Kendrick was the top participant
in the school.
Teachers participating in the
program
by
establishing
individual goals and working
with parents to monitor progress
were: Cherry Webber, Lea
Calvert, Joy Krein, Sherry
Matteson, Cara Osmin, Karen
Dubuque, Mary Haguewood, Pat
Hentges and Linda Shaw.
Students earning certificates in
the 1997-1998 school year were:

conveyor were on fire.
The fire spread to a barge and
to piles of chips located on each
side of the conveyor. The fire
was extinguished with the help of
fire departments from Boardman,
Hermiston, Irrigon, Heppner,
Ione. Echo, Umatilla Chemical

The Boardman Police and the

The cause of the fire is still
unknown, but officials stress that
the fire was not related to the
