Mustangs clinch spot in CBC championship

The Heppner Mustangs
climbed a spot at the Columbia
Basin District Championship by
beating Weston McEwen 9-4 on
Tuesday, May 5, at Heppner.
The Mustangs came from a 4-3
deficit, scoring six runs in the
sixth inning, thanks to back-to-
back home runs by Tim Sumner
and Josh Hill.
The TigerScots advanced a
runner to second base in the top
of the first inning, but Tim
Dickenson nabbed a line drive at
shortstop and flipped to Derek
Gunderson at second for a double
play.
In the top of the second the
TigerScots scored a run on a
fielder’s choice, stolen base and a

Scholarship Trust announces
recipients of the 1998- $500
scholarships. Winners are Kara
Miller, Jennifer Sullivan, Jake
McElligott
and
Nathan
Rietmann, all students of lone
High School.
Kara Miller is the daughter of
George and Nancy Miller of
lone. Kara is looking at Linfield
College to study pre-medicine.
She has been active in 4-H,
Future Business Leaders of
America and the STARS and
OSSOM programs of lone
Schools. Krarais salutatorian of
the class of 1998 and has been
Big Sky scholar athlete for four
years. She has been very active
in sports, school and community
activities.
Jennifer Sullivan is the
daughter of Brian and Lone
Sullivan of lone. Jennifer plans
to mSjor in the field of business.
She is looking at the University
of Oregon. Jennifer is involved
in the Future Business Leaders of
America and will be attending
the state FBLA competition and
competing in the business
communications contest. She is
president of the National Honor
Society and very active in sports,
community and school activities.
Jake McElligott is the son of
Joseph and Jeri McElligott of
lone. He is the recipient of the
corporation award.
This
scholarship is from the interest of
the investment of Kinzua
Corporation of Seattle, which
was a 10,000 gift. Each year a
$500 gift is given in honor of the
corporation.
Jake was class
president in 1997 and student
body president. He is involved
in sports, community and school
activities and has been a member
o f the Letter Club for four years
winning various awards for
basketball.
Jake is planning to attend
Gonzaga University in the fall,
majoring in biology.
Nathan Rietmann, the son of
John and Kerry Rietmann of
lone, is planning on attending
Willamette University in Salem
to study political science.
Nathan is community active,
participating
in
various
community projects. He is a
member of OSSOM. National
Honor Society, student council,
drama, varsity tennis and varsity
basketball. Nathan won first
place in the Umatilla/Morrow
County Bar Association writing
contest.
The four students were selected
out of 14 applicants on the basis
of academic achievement, chosen
field of study, financial need,
school participation, degree of
effort the student has made in
funding sources for college,
personal characteristics
for
success and school citizenship.
The board of directors of the
scholarship trust include Bill
Rietmann, president, George
Koffler, vice-president. Bob Kahl
treasurer.

Harrison
secretary, the Rev. Al Trachsel,
Nathan Rietmann
Del LaRue and Missy Cutsforth.
The board is available to speak
to individuals or groups about the
program and how to invest
money at tax saving in the future.
lone Postmaster Nancy McKay
will host a bnef ceremony
Friday, May 15, at 8 a.m. to raise
the POW-MIA flag at the post
office, 180 Main Street.
In addition to the lone postal
employees, other invited guests
include the lone American
Legion Post # 95.
"I am very proud that the lone
post office is taking this action,"
said McKay. "The black and
while POW-MIA flag is a
sobering reminder of the
sacrifices made for all of us.

unaccounted for in our nation's

Matheny lead off with a double
and scored on a double by
Dickenson. Allan Gnbskov then
walked, Dickenson was thrown
out stealing third and Chris
Anthony reached on a fielder's
choice. Sumner then hit a fly ball
to center field to score Gnbskov
on the sacrifice.
The TigerScots' Heath Giger
hit a two-run home run at the
foul pole in left field to tie the
game at 3-3. A hit, stolen base
and throwing error gave the
TigerScots the lead, 4 to 3, but
good defense and pitching held

rest of the way as the Mustangs
turned a double play in the top of
the sixth to end a threat.
In the bottom of the sixth
Sumner hit his second home run
to tie the game at 4-4 and Hill hit
the next pitch over the left field
fence to give the Mustangs the
lead. Zach Fabian and Dylan
Pettyjohn both walked and
moved up a base on a wild pitch.
Gunderson then walked to load
the bases and Matheny walked to
score Fabian. Dickenson hit a
sacrifice fly to score Pettyjohn
and Gnbskov hit a double to
score Gunderson. The Mustangs'
final run came on a fielder’s
choice by Anthony to score
Matheny, giving Heppner a 9-4
lead.
Pettyjohn struck out two
batters, including the final out to
pick up the win in relief of
Anthony.
Sumner had the big bat for the
Mustangs, going two for three
with his two home runs, and had
three RBIs. Matheny went two
for three with a double and an
RBI. Hill was one for three with
a home run. Pettyjohn struck out
five in his three innings of relief.
The Mustangs played at Pilot
Rock on Tuesday, May 12, in a
big game to decide first or
second place m the East
Division.
With the win, the Mustangs
improve to 11 and two in league
play and 15 and four overall.
