The MS Walk & Roll, Rain or
Shine held in Heppner Saturday,
April 18, drew 38 participants
and earned over $5,000 to help
fight multiple sclerosis.
"We all had fun raising money
to help those with MS," said
local
chairperson,
Merilee
McDowell. "Come join us next
year."
McDowell said that Kinzua
Resources gave "a nice donation"
to each of their walkers and the
walkers also raised money on
their own.
Walkers came from Heppner,
Lexington, lone, Pilot Rock,
Hermiston and Pendleton.
Volunteers included: George
Naims, Bob and Aloha DeSpain,
John Edmundson,
Claudia
Hughes, Lindsey Ward, Sandy
Matthews, Bill and Danielle
McDowell, Greg and Ten Lynch,
representing Campus Life, and
Florene Robinson and Kay Rene
Qualls, representing Klamath
First Federal.
The participants enjoyed a
lunch of soup and rolls at All
Saints
Episcopal
Church
following the walk.
Klamath First Federal to host
"Business After Hours"
Klamath First Federal,
Heppner branch, will be the host
for the Heppner Chamber of
Commerce's "Business After
Hours" Tuesday, May 5, starting
at 6 p.m. at the bank.
The evening will feature an art
display by Heartworks, an art
class tor area youth lead by Mark
and Astrid Bruno of lone and
Jean Clugston. Heppner.. Other
artists will also display their
works.
Refreshments will be
provided and door prizes
awarded.
Everyone is invited to attend.
Niki Sullivan and Katie
Tworek, both juniors at lone
High School, have been selected
to attend Girls' State, a two-day
mock government exercise to be
held at Linfield College this
summer. Girls' State, which
involves girls selected from all
over Oregon, is sponsored by
American Legion Auxiliary.
Niki Sullivan, 17, is the
daughter of Brian and Lon
Sullivan. She participates in
volleyball, basketball, tennis and
drama. She is a member of the
National Honor Society, FBLA,
letter club, the Ecumenical Youth
Group and OSSOM. Sullivan is
the junior class president and will
be a counselor at Tupper next
week.
Katie Tworek, 16, is the
daughter of Conrad and Lucy
Tworek. She participates in
voleyball, tennis, drama and was
the manager of the boys'
basketball team. She is a member
of the National Honor Society,
leter club, the Positive Action
Committe, the Ecumenical Youth
Group and the junior class vice-
president.

absent. Club members made

tape o f how she did at state fair.

grants awarded
The Morrow County Commis­
sion on Children and Families
(MCCCF) approved four commu­
nity development proposals on
April 14.
Grants totaling $1,500 were
distributed for a “Kids Aware-
Beware” program, sponsored by
the Oregon Trail Library District;
“Moonlight Bowling” program
for youth in Heppner; a children’s
reading program sponsored by the
lone Topic Club; and a teen-par­
ent child care assistance program
sponsored by the Boardman Child
Development Center.
The Community Development
Fund was established for commu­
nity needs and to leverage other
funds and resources into services,
advocacy and unique application
projects for the children, youth
and families of Morrow County.
There is approximately $1,000
available each quarter and the
maximum grant is $500. Ex­
amples of reasonable Community
Development Fund requests in­
clude seasonal program staff
training; one-time events and pi­
lot projects. Home day-care pro­
viders may also apply for funds
to enhance the quality and avail­
ability, but they must be regis­
tered by the state or have regis­
tration forms submitted to the
state for approval at the time of
request for fluids, said Dar Merrill
MCCCF director.
Next quarter’s proposals will
be reviewed on July 14, during the
monthly commission meeting,
but must be received by the com­
mission office by June 30 to be
considered. A pplications are
available at the commission of­
fice at 120 South Main, Heppner,
or by calling 676-9675.
