    Heppner recommended for youth camp
The Juvenile Corrections Sit
ing Committee April 17 recom
mended Heppner for the location
of a 50 bed Youth Accountabil
ity Camp.
The Oregon Youth Authority
(OYA) has 30 days to accept or
reject the siting committee’s rec
ommendation. The Heppner site
was chosen over two sites in
Union County.
According to an April 18 story
in the “LaGrande Observer”
newspaper, the city council of
Union passed a resolution re

questing that Union be withdrawn
from consideration as a site for
the camp.
The camp, when built, will
serve up to 50 youthful property
offenders who have been commit
ted to the custody of the Youth
Authority primarily from central
and eastern Oregon counties.
Approximately 35 jobs come with
the program.
Criteria used by the siting com
mittee included community sup
port, availability of infrastructure,
site development costs and other
factors, said an OYA news re
lease.

“I am pleased with the work of
the Siting Committee,” said Rick
Hill, OYA director. “They held
thorough public hearings and
spent considerable time review
ing engineering and geotechnical
reports. I hope we can negotiate
successfully with city, county and
port officials to solidify the infra
structure agreements.”
Siting Committee members are
Joyce Morgan, Douglas County
Commission Chair; Timothy
Travis, with the Juvenile Court
Improvement Project; and Barton

More than 50 aliens landed at
the Morrow County Museum last
Saturday and the invasion was a
"total success", according to
museum director Marsha Sweek.
Visitors from as far away as the
Tri-Cities and The Dalles came
to the gathering of science fiction
fans, called "Invasion," to
compare collections and discuss
the relative merits of their
favorite books, films and tv
shows. Predominate in the
current Sci-Fi FANtastic exhibit
and at the Invasion are
representations of the Star Trek
Universe and those of Star Wars.
In addition, many other works
in all media have inspired
collectors. Visitors last Saturday
participated in trivia contests,
costume contests, a silent
auction, The Great Alien Hunt
and a tour of downtown Heppner
during which they had to check
in at the businesses.
Winners were announced at
dinner Saturday night, at which
about 35 people were present.
Winners for the trivia contests
were: Star Trek-Nat Saenze of
Richland, Washington; Star
Wars-Genny Sneddon of
