« Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Mustangs beat Tigers in double-header By Rick Paullus The H eppner M ustangs opened their 1998 Columbia Ba­ sin Conference baseball season with a doubleheader sweep of the Stanfield Tigers, winning the first game, 16-2, and the second game, 13-3. Both games went just five innings, due to the 10-run rule. Senior Chris Anthony started on the mound in the first game and shut down the Tigers for the first three innings, allowing no hits and facing just 10 batters. In the meantime, the Mustangs jumped on Stanfield’s pitching, scoring two runs in the first and third innings, and seven runs in the second with five more in the fourth. Junior Derek Gunderson led o ff the first with a walk and moved to second on junior Shane Matheny’s single. After Gunder­ son stole third, he scored on jun­ ior Tim Dickenson’s sacrifice fly to centerfield. M atheny then scored as the Tigers were able to turn a double play to end the in­ ning. In the second inning, senior Tim Sumner hit a ball off the right field wall that got hung up behind the boards and was awarded a ground rule double. Junior Bias Elguezabal then singled to right and freshman Cory Bennetto hit a drive off the fence in right-cen­ ter for a long single to score Sum­ ner. W ith one out, G underson singled to load the bases. Matheny singled to score Elgue­ zabal and Bennetto scored on a passed ball. Dickenson walked and Gunderson scored on the wild pitch. Anthony hit into a fielder’s choice to score M atheny and Sum ner singled to drive in Dickenson. Anthony closed out the scoring as he came in on a sto­ len base by Sumner. In the third inning, Gunderson walked on four straight pitches. Matheny then hit the day’s only home run by hammering a line drive through the wind over the fence in left field, to make the score 11-0. The Tigers then scored their two runs in the top of the fourth as a fly ball was lost in the sun for a double and a single brought the runner home. With two outs, the Tigers scored the second run on a bases-loaded walk. In the bottom o f the fourth, Bennetto led off with a walk, stole second and went to third as Gunderson got on base with an error. Matheny then walked and Dickenson walked with the bases loaded to score B ennetto. Gunderson then came home on a passed ball as Alan Gribskov walked. Matheny and Dickenson scored as Sumner got to first on an error by the pitcher. Elgue­ zabal closed the scoring by dou­ bling home Gribskov. Sophomore Dylan Pettyjohn came in to pitch the fifth inning for the Mustangs and allowed an infield hit which was erased as Gribskov threw the Tiger out try­ ing to steal second. Stanfield got a runner to third, but Pettyjohn struck out the last batter to end the game, with the Mustangs win­ ning, 16-2. The Mustangs were led at the plate by Matheny going 2-4 with three RBIs and a home run. Gunderson was 1-4 and scored four runs. Sumner was 2-4 with a double and three RBIs. Elgue­ zabal was 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. Anthony pitched three and two-thirds strong innings, with relief help from Sumner, and Pettyjohn’s shutout fifth inning. In game two, Stanfieldjumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. In the Mustangs’ half of the inning, Matheny led off with a walk, Gunderson singled and Dickenson bunted them over to second and third. Gribskov then doubled to score both run­ ners. A nthony singled and Gribskov scored on Elguezabal’s groundout. Anthony scored on an infield single by Sumner to put the Mustangs up 4-1 after one in­ ning. Stanfield pulled to 4-3 in the top of the third, but the Mustangs scored two runs of their own to make it 6-3. Elguezabal singled with one out, followed by a Sumner single. Zach Fabian then doubled to score Elguezabal. Matheny got an infield hit to score Sumner. The Mustangs scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. Anthony led off with an infield hit and Elguezabal walked. Sumner tripled off the right field wall to score both run­ ners. Sumner came home on a passed ball. Fabian w alked, Matheny singled and Gunderson walked to lead the bases with one out. Dickenson then walked to score Fabian. M atheny came home on G ribskov’s fielder’s choice and Anthony walked to score Gunderson. Elguezabal then hit into a fielder’s choice to score Dickenson to end the game at 13-3. Dickenson went the distance on the mound to pick up the win, allowing four Stanfield hits. Sumner led the Mustangs at the plate, going 3-3, with a triple and three RBIs. Elguezabal went 2-3 with two RBIs. Matheny also went 2-3. Gribskov had a double and three RBIs. The Mustangs ended up with 12 hits for the game. The Mustangs were to play at Umatilla on Tuesday and will come back home on Saturday to face Pilot Rock in a key double- header.
