Twenty-five members of the
Heppner Junior High/Senior
High School Band had a great
experience when they became
part of a 250-member band for a
day at the Tn County High
School Band Festival. The music
event was held on Wednesday,
April 1, at Helix High School.
The 11 school bands from
schools in Morrow, Umatilla and
Sherman counties participating
included: Heppner, Riverside,
Weston MeEwen, Stanfield, Pilot
Rock, Helix, Echo, Sherman,
South Wasco, Arlington, and
Culver. Music students spent
most of the day in Helix
practicing with the other bands to
prepare for the concert that was
given that evening.
The large combined band was
directed by guest band director,
Dr. Philip Cansler. Cansler is a
professor of music and director
of bands at the University of
Portland and has performed
through Europe, Japan and the
U.S. as a trumpet recitalist. "He
was an inspiration to all the
students, especially the 40
students who played trumpet that
day," said a spokesperson.
The mass band performed:
March For Freedom, The
Masterpiece,
El
Capitan,
Majestia, and Celebrated Air.
In addition to the combined
band selections, Heppner High

OREGON'S BACKBONE
Most rural Oregonians are familiar with AG-PAC, the organization
representing twenty-five natural resource groups which keeps an eye on the
politicians and bureaucrats in Salem whose actions affect those of us who
make our living on the land. AG-PAC members aren’t your Salem blue-suit
types. Instead, they’re real life working people, in cattle and crops, timber
and rocks ... smart business people familiar with sweat and calluses.
These are people who know how government can screw things up
out here, especially with well-intentioned, but naive, rules and regulations.
That’s why they want someone in Salem from this district who understands
there is more to Oregon than the Willamette Valley.
I am pleased and proud to say that AG-PAC members have given me
their endorsement in my race with Lynn Lundquist. They decided to choose
me over the incumbent, a Speaker of the House, no less ... and I know why.
PROM
SPECIAL
They know that when I’m in Salem, I’ll work with other rural legislators to
remind our colleagues that Oregon IS a natural resource state. We’ll remind
them about things ... like trees are a renewable resource ... that we use cattle
to harvest grass off otherwise unproductive land, that grazing reduces the
potential for wildfire ... and that our cows fertilize range and forest land.
Classic
Rural counties may not have a high espresso/boutique density,
but our agriculture and natural resource industries
^
...
create family wage jobs ... and contribute an
annual $14 billion to the Oregon economy,
way more than the “high-tech” industry!
They need to know that we’re the backbone
of a working state.

School Band and three other
bands each performed their own
individual
band
selection.
Heppner band director Ralph
Wemer directed the Heppner
students in the March of the
King's Trumpeters.
A highlight of the concert was
when all the school band
directors and Dr. Cansler got
together and played four songs in
their own Dixieland Band
performance. Wemer played the
tuba in that group.
The Heppner music students
who
performed
included:
Meghan Bailey, Krystal Baker,
David Bates, Cody Bellamy,
Travis Bellamy, Jon Bennett,
Joseph Bouree, Brad Bowman,
Chris Bowman, Maja Dietiker,
Kevin Drake, Daniel Jepsen,
Matt Jepsen, Heidi Kurts, Jody
Maddem, Mitch Mathews, Rob
McKenzie, Josh McKinney,
Justin Nelson, David Norton,
Leland Rill, Isaiah Stillman,
Heath Stillman, Heidi Turrell and
Sam Van Liew.
Another Tri County Band
Festival, specifically for seventh
and eighth grade students, will be
held Wednesday, April 29, at
Columbia Junior High in Imgon.
A concert will be given that
evening, with $1 admission for
adults. Ralph Wemer plans to
have Heppner Band students in
that event as well.
