Mustangs drop opener to Pendleton JVs
By Rick Paullus
The Heppner. M ustangs
opened their 1998 baseball sea
son by losing to the Pendleton
JVs, 12-8. The Mustangs were
outhit 12-6 and committed six
errors to five for Pendleton.
The Mustangs were led at the
plate by Chris Anthony, with two
doubles. Derek Gunderson and
Tim Sumner each had two RBIs.
Tim Dickenson started on the
mound for the Mustangs and took
the loss. Anthony pitched three
innings of relief and did not al
low a run.
Bnan Turk of Pendleton hit the
game’s only home run and ex-
Mustang Jeff Waterland had two
RBIs against his former team
mates.
The Mustangs will be count
ing on Sumner this season for his
pitching, hitting and play behind
the plate. Senior Chris Anthony
will play in the outfield and see
plenty of action on the mound.
Juniors Shane M atheny,
Dickenson and Gunderson will
anchor the infield. Matheny was
an all-league selection last year
at third and Gunderson will play
second. Dickenson will play
shortstop when not pitching.
Along with the veterans, the
Mustangs have a good group of
sophomores in Cody Bellamy,
Allen Gribskov, Dylan Pettyjohn
and Josh Hill, who are looking to
find a starting position.
Two other juniors who are
looking to break into the starting
role are Bias Elguezabal, who is
a probable at first, and David
Bates, who is looking at an out
field position. Both could see
some time on the mound.
The M ustangs “have been
working hard and are looking to
get off to a good start and improv
ing on our consistency from last
year,” according to head coach,
Robin Graff. Assisting coach
Graff this year will be Tony Pupo.
The next game for the Mus
tangs will be in Heppner, Satur
day, April 4 against the Stanfield
Tigers, starting at 11 a.m.
Local soloists compete at district
Five Heppner instrumental
music students were among
almost 200 students who
competed at the Oregon Music
Educators Association District
VI Solo and Ensemble Contest.
The competition was held in La
Grande on Saturday, March 7, at
Eastern Oregon University.
* The Heppner students included
four who competed in the Junior
division.
Daniel Jepsert and
Emily Unruh both earned a
superior rating of 1 for their
clarinet
and
flute
solos
respectively. Darren Van Cleave
and Meaghan Unruh received a
rating
of
2
for
their
performances. Darren played the
trumpet and Meaghan the
clarinet. Emily, Meaghan, and
Darren were all accompanied by
Myma Van Cleave on the piano.
Daniel was accompanied by his
brother Matt, who played the
accompaniment on the bass
violin.
In the high school competition,
Matt Jepsen received a superior
rating of 1 for his trumpet solo
and placed first in the trumpet
division. He will advance to the
Oregon State Solo Competition
finals to be held at the University
of Oregon in Eugene on April 25.
Matt was accompanied by
Deborah Wryn of lone on the
piano. He also entered the bass
violin competition and received a
two-plus rating for that effort.
Competitors were rated with a
one-plus as the highest possible
score and a five the lowest.
There were five different
divisions
in the contest:
instrumental, vocal, strings,
piano and percussion.
Emily and Meaghan are the
daughters of Loren and Kathryn
Unruh. Darren is the son of Tim
and Myma Van Cleave, and Matt
and Daniel are the sons of Bill
and Nancy Jepsen, all of
Heppner.
According to Heppner band
director and music teacher Ralph
Wemer, this was the best
showing of local students at the
district contest in several years.
He says he hopes to have even
more music students involved
next year.

the Senior Center office. She is greatly appreciated. Welcome
aboard Betty.
Jane Rawlins of the Senior Center office staff was in Portland last
week for medical attention. We hope she will be back with us in the
office soon.
The dining room was beautifully decorated in spring colors and
flower arrangements for the RSVP appreciation dinner Monday,
March 30. Eva Mabbot of CAPECO and Don Thomdyke of RSVP
were over from Pendleton to help with the dinner and give out
awards. Music was provided by an ensemble from the Oregon Fast
Symphony. There were 79 volunteers present for the meal. The
food was delicious; the cooks and assistants are to be commended
for a job well done.
The Red Cross held a blood drawing at the center Tuesday,
March 24. The afternoon and evening informational meetings
about the Youth Accountability Camp were well attended. Most of
those attending were in favor of the camp.
