From February 2 until February
12, lone Elementary and Middle
School were graced with the
presence of Ellie Belew, an
artist-in-residence whose niche is
in creative writing.
K-6 grades at lone did writing
activities and exercises with
Belew; the students even ended
up with a portfolio after their two
weeks with Belew were over. At
the end of the two weeks, the
students invited parents and
community to an assembly and
open house to share their work.
Students' writing activities
included describing people they
admire, describing objects or
fantasy "beings" and doing
exercises to help them come up
with ideas. "1 encourage the kids
to keep writing," says Belew. "I
hope that what they have gained
from me being here is the ability
to take what they know and
continue to write."
"I hope that the students will be
able to move on from what
they've done in the past couple of
weeks," she says. "I love the
creative energy that I get from
the kids, and I like to see what
they are interested in."
Belew
does about three
residences a year at rural schools
and says she finds that helping
children write helps her with her
own writing. Belew is a free
lance journalist who resides in
Roslyn, WA, but she also
publishes stories and has a novel
being marketed in New York.
The Artist in Education
program has been a part of lone
Elementary School curriculum
for about 10 years. It is funded
by the Oregon Arts Commission
and the National Endowment for
the Arts and administered by the
Eastern Oregon University.
Betty Rietmann, an elementary
school
teacher
at
lone,
coordinates the program each
year and Dot Halvorsen has
provided a home for the artists
during their residency.
St. Patrick's Parish holds Faith Fair
The children of St. Patrick’s
Parish recently presented their
annual Faith Fair. The fair was
introduced by Mike Armato, then
children and their teachers gave
a description of what they had
been studying in their religion
classes.
Kindergarten and first grade
children made mobiles in the
shape of doves and flames to il
lustrate the grace o f the sacra
ments.
Second grade students pre
pared a prayer for reconciliation
which demonstrated their under
standing of the sacrament of rec-
onciliation.
Grades three-four made a card
board model of the parish church,
including illustrations of the Sta
tions of the Cross and the Seven
Sacraments.
Grades five-six made bag pup
pets of the saint of their choice,
pasted pictures of the saints on the
covers of their workbooks and
also made mobiles illustrating the
sacraments of initiation.
Students in grades seven-eight
illustrated the Rosary, told the
history of the Rosary and ex
plained the origin of the prayers
of the Rosary.
Ground preparation is underway
for the erection of a multipurpose
building at the Morrow County
Fairgrounds.
Intermountain Steel Buildings,
Inc. of Idaho Falls, Idaho, will
provide the concrete work for the
foundations and bleacher seating.
Northwest Metal Fabricators of
Hermiston is donating the use of
their equipment and employees
are donating their time to put up
the framework.
In addition to brand boards and
donor recognition to be displayed
inside this building, large 8' x 12'
nylon banners will be hung in
recognition
of
individual
contribution of $2,500 or more.
To date these donors include the
Morrow
County
Livestock
Growers, the Morrow County
Grain Growers, Northwest Metal
Fabricators and the Morrow
County 4-H Council. Donations
are still be sought to cover
expenses

MC representatives speak to state

Marks,

econom ic
developm ent
coordinator spoke to state
officials Feb. 17 in Prineville
concerning the possible siting of
a "youth accountability camp"
near Heppner.
According to Marks, the siting
committee is to have a list of
three or fewer sites narrowed
down by March 8.
After selecting the "short list”
of sites, Marks says that the
siting committee will publish the
list of site or sites and then visit
each location and hold a hearing
within a 30-day period.
After those procedures, the
siting
committee
must
recommend one site to Rick Hill,
director of the Oregon Youth
Authority. Hill then has 30 days
to accept or reject the chosen
site. Marks said that a decision is
expected to be made by mid-
April. If Hill rejects the site
chosen by the siting committee,
however, the whole process will
begin again, according to Marks.
