The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead to start the game and took a 14-11 lead after one quarter of play. The Tigers came back to pull within one as Hepp ner led 27-26 at halftime. The Tigers outscored the Mus tangs 15-8 in the third quarter to take a 41-35 lead into the fourth. The Mustangs battled back, and, with :57 seconds left, Craig Scott hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 53-53. The Tigers failed to score and after a timeout, the Mustangs’ Blake Knowles was fouled with :12 seconds left. Knowles made one of two baskets give Heppner the win. The Mustangs rally was lead by Joe Papineau’s rebounding and scoring as he scored 13 points in the fourth quarter. M ichael Schonbachler added 12 points for the Mustangs. Lady Cardinals win second place in Big Sky By Kara Miller The lone Lady Cardinals beat Dufur 63-29 for second place in the Big Sky 1A district tournament Friday, Feb. 20. The Lady Cards had to have two wins at the district playoffs in order to get their opportunity to play at the state 1A championships in Baker City. The lone squad faced Dufur in the first game of the Big Sky district tournament last Friday afternoon. Hie two teams met a few weeks earlier and lone had won the contest but rumors were flying that Dufur had two new powerhouses and were going to get revenge. The Cardinals squad went into tournament play with just four of their members having some previous tournament experience. The opening tip went to lone but the Rangers finished the first quarter 12 to 8 over the Cardinals.' The Cards started flying in the second quarter and outscored Dufur, 23-4, ending the half with a 31-16 lead. "We started out a little rough, but our defensive pressure up front forced some steals when we were down a little bit and we converted on them," said Cardinals' coach Dana Heideman. "We broke them down in the second quarter and that was the key." Nikki McElligott finished with a game-high 21 points and also led the team with eight rebounds. Camie Burright pulled down six boards and contributed 16 points while her sister Brenda added 11 points, three assists and four steals. Gary Oberg, owner and head instructor at Kim's TKD, said that he is elated to receive funds to purchase additional training equipment for use by the students.
