By Kara Miller The lone Lady Cardinals downed Culver, 52-33 for a ticket to the 1A state championship contest to be held Thursday, March 5, at Baker City. Condon confirmed their number one position by downing Culver, the West side leader, on Friday. That created the "loser out" showdown between the Cardinals and the Bulldogs for the last ticket to the 1A championships in Baker City. lone knew that Talbot and Carlson were Culver's ammunition but ' Galloway stepped up and added to the Bulldog scoring attack. The tenacious Bulldogs kept nipping at the Cards' feathers until the third period of play. The lone squad executed a pressure defense that kept Culver off- balance throughout the game Three Cardinals, Nikki McElligott, Camie Burright and Kara Miller each scored a lucky 13 points and Brenda Burright added 11 to lift lone over Culver 52-33 at the final buzzer. The excitement didn't end with the win however, as lone was awarded both the tournament sportsmanship award and the Big Sky District Girls' Sportsmanship Award for the season and teammate Nikki McElligott was honored with the "Jason Halvorsen Spirit of Basketball Award." Brenda and Camie Burright received Big Sky East honorable mention honors and Nikki McElligott was selected for the Big Sky East First Team All-Stars. The Cardinals last made a trip to "The Big Dance" in 1996 when they toppled Powers in the championship game to win the state title. They will face Jordan Valley at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 5 in the second day of action at the Oregon State 1A Basketball Championship Tournament at the Baker High School Gym in Baker City. Teenager shot in lone; another teen arrested * The Cardinal is ready for state playoffs too One lone teenager was shot in the chest by a .22 caliber semi­ automatic pistol and another teenager was arrested for the shooting Monday evening. According to the Morrow County District Attorney Earl R Woods, Jr., Will McElligott, 16 years old, lone, was allegedly shot by Steve Crum, also 16,'at Crum's residence, 565 E. Second Street in lone, at around 4:57 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23. Woods, who was in lone at the time of the shooting and responded shortly thereafter, said that McElligott suffered a "tunnel" injury to the chest. Woods said the bullet passed completely through McElligotfs chest, nicking the right lobe of his lung, but fortunately missing continued back page The St. Patrick's Committee has announced that the Hirl family will be the honored St. Patrick's Celebration family this year. Philip Hirl, grandfather of the present Hirl descendants, was bom in Donegal County, Ireland, in 1868 to Edmond and Rose Hirl. When Philip was 13 years old in 1881, Edmond and Rose migrated to the United States bringing Philip and other two sons, Charlie and Dan, with them. The family traveled by steamship and came all the way around Cape Horn to San Francisco and later to Morrow County. They settled on a homestead in what is now known as Hog Hollow canyon near Vinson. Mary Doherty Hirl was also bom in Donegal County in 1881. Her parents were William and Suzy Doherty, who were Irish farmers. Mary originally married a man named Ruddy who died shortly after the birth of her three children. Because of the potato famine in Ireland Mary was forced to leave her children with her mother and migrated to the United States where she worked in a bakery for the next nine years to earn money to send home to Ireland to buy food for her children to prevent their starvation. From Boston, Mary came to Morrow County and lived with her sister, Katie Doherty, on a ranch in Sand Hollow. It was there she ran into her childhood friend from Ireland, Phil Hirl. They were later married and moved to the original Hirl homestead in Hog Hollow which had been purchased from Phil’s parents. Phil an Mary later purchased a 4000-acre ranch in McDonald Canyon where they lived for 40 years, raising wheat, hay and cattle. It was there that they Phillip and Mary Hirl and Daughter Rose raised their four children. Rose, Mary, Edmond and Charlie. Rose was bom on the original homestead and the three younger children were bom in Heppner and Pendleton and all grew' up on the McDonald Canyon ranch. Rose married Herbert French and had three children, Raymond of Heppner, former rancher who presently serves as Morrow County Commissioner; Joe, retired attorney and formerly of Salem, who recently moved to Las Vegas, Nevada; and Dorothy O'Rourke of Pendleton, retired secretary for State Farm Mutual Insurance Company. After Herbert’s death in 1936 Rose married Bill Francis, local state policeman, and to this union was bom Francine Evans of Irrigon, who is a nurse at Good Shepherd Hospital in Hermiston. Mary married Vier Hale and they had twin daughters, Juanita Proctor, who, with her husband Rocky, operates their livestock ranch at Irrigon, and Margaret Piper, retired homemaker of Hermiston. Edmond married Lorene Heath, a local school teacher, and to them w as bom one son, Philip, of Tigard. Philip is now retired after a career with the United States Forest Service. Also included in Phil and Mary Hirl's descendants are 32 great grandchildren, 38 great, great­ grandchildren, and now two great, great, great-grandchildren. It has also been noted that of all the above living descendants of Phil and Mary Hirl, over 50 percent of them still live in Morrow and Umatilla counties. Doug Rathbun announces candidacy for County judge Doug Rathbun Heppner Police Chief Douglas C. Rathbun, 54, of Heppner, has announced his candidacy for Morrow County Judge position. Rathbun has been a police chief for over 20 years and in law enforcement a total of 27 years. Rathbun has put together budgets for 20 years and is also treasurer of the Morrow County Tourism Community, co-chair of Oregon Together, past president of the Morrow County Tourism Committee and is on the board of directors of the Oregon Chief of Police Association. Rathbun was bom and raised in Eugene and graduated from North Eugene High School. After high school he went into the Navy for four years, returned to Oregon and then went to work for Cummins Oregon Diesel working as paymaster for one year. While working for Cummins, he became a reserve police officer for the city of Portland and then went on to become a police chief. Rathbun received a degree from Blue Mountain Community College and holds the highest certificate from the board on police standards and training Rathbun has three children, Carllena, Christy, and Charles, and two grandchildren. Rathbun said he is 100 percent in favor of the Oregon Youth Camp, a youth "accountability camp" that is being considered for the Heppner area "The county needs more interest in our youth," he said. Rathbun and his wife, Georgia, have been foster parents for many years. Rathbun said he will retire as chief of police if elected. Rathbun, who is a democrat, said that the lack of democratic candidates running for the position influenced his decision to run. Currently, four Republican candidates have filed for the position: Bill Doherty, Guy Van Arsdale, Rollie Marshall and Keith Lewis. Present judge, Louis Carlson, has said he will not seek re-election. One candidate, Dan Brosnan. has filed for the commissioner's position being vacated by Ray French French also said he would not seek re-election. Deadline to file for the May 19 election is Tuesday, March 10 . Girls to face Jordan Valiev The lone Cardinal varsity girls' basketball team won their district contest and will advance to the state 1A tournament. They will play Thursday, March 5, against Jordan Valley at 1:30 p.m. at Baker City High School.
