Mustangs come back to win in overtime Mustangs drop game to Umatilla Vikings

The Heppner Mustangs varsity
boys ended a long weekend by
travelling to The Dalles and com
ing from behind to defeat the
Wahtonka Eagles, 72-68, in over
time. The Mustangs had trailed by
as many as 14 points before mak
ing a furious comeback in the
fourth quarter to tie the game and
then outscore the Eagles, 16-12,
in overtime to win the game.
The Mustangs started out slow
as they fell behind 5-0 before a
Tim Dickenson lay-in with 4:03
left gave the Mustangs their first
score. Freshman Ryan Matteson
came off the bench to hit a three-
pointer to make it 7-5, Wahtonka.
Casey Evans tied the score at 7-
7. Victor Cervantes hit a three-
pointer at the buzzer to give the
Eagles a 10-7 lead after one quar
ter.
Cervantes continued his hot
shooting in the second quarter,
hitting two three-pointers and
scoring 12 points to extend
Wahtonka’s lead to 29-19 at the
half.
Chris Anthony hit a three-
pointer to close it to 29-22 to start
the third quarter for the Mustangs.
Each team ran off a string of five
or six points throughout the third
quarter. Wahtonka led 46-34 go
ing into the fourth quarter.
After the Eagles scored, the
Mustangs came back and, with
5:50 left, Evans made a nice steal
and lay-in to make it 48-40. Mat
teson and Anthony then hit back-
to-back three-pointers to close the
score to 50-46. A short jump shot
by Dickenson made it 53-50 with
2:13 left.
Jared Eckman hit a jump shot,
then made two free throws with
:31 seconds left to tie the game at
54-54. A Wahtonka free throw
made it 55-54, but Matteson hit a
jump shot w ith: 13 left to give the
Mustangs a 56-55 lead. Cervantes
made one of two free throws to
tie the game at 56-56 and send the
game into overtime.
The Mustangs took no time
jumping on the Eagles in over
time, as Eckman made one free
throw and Dickenson made two
free throws to up their score to 59-
56. Matteson then hit two jump
ers in a row to make it 63-56 with
1:52 left. Cervantes then made
two free throws and got a steal
and lay-in to make it 63-60. An
thony made two free throws,
Dickenson made four free throws
and Derek Gunderson hit three to
up the score to 72-62 and ice the
game. Wahtonka hit two three-
pointers at the end to make the
final score 72-68.
Heppner was led by Matteson
who hit some big shots and scored
20 points, including four three-
pointers. Dickenson made 11 of
12 free throws to finish with 15
points and Anthony hit three
three-pointers and finished with
13 points. The Mustangs hit 19-
25 free throws for the game.
The Eagles were led by
Cervantes, who hit five three-
pointers and ended up with 29
points.

The varsity Mustang girls
upped their winning streak to
four on Saturday, January 24,
roasting the Wahtonka Eagles on
their home court, 55-46. This
win puts the Mustangs in a tie
with the Weston-McEwen Tiger-
Scots for the top slot in the CBC
with identical 4-and-l records.
The Mustangs will host the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-Scots
this Friday night, hoping to
avenge Heppner's only league
loss. Sports fans will not want to
be absent, for there is no doubt
that this bam-bumer will be the
CBC game of the week.
Heppner bolted to an 11 -point
lead against the Eagles in the
first quarter, 21-10, and then
cantered through the rest of game
by maintaining that margin. The
Heppner squad lead 31-22 at the
half and 41-30 at the three
quarter mark.

A program titled “Haz-Mat”
will be offered to Emergency
Medical Technicians (EMT) at
Ed-Net I sites, on Thursday, Feb.
12 from 7-9 p.m.
This course will cover common
hazardous material injuries and
patient care specific to those situ
ations, turning over patient care
to hospitals, case reviews, how to
protect yourself and others and
guidelines on how EMTs and haz-
mat work together.
The program instructor is Mark
Stephens, EMT-P.
The cost of the class is $15 or
$45 for all three classes.

Condon squeaks past lone, 30-24

The lone Middle School boys
played Condon on Friday, Jan 16.
Condon went away with the win,
30-24.
It was a close and fast-paced
game from the beginning. In the
first quarter, trouble started for
lone when Adam Neiffer got into
foul trouble. He had three fouls
by the end of the quarter. A tre
mendous number of shots were
taken, but lone could only end up
with two points coming from
Adam M cCabe. Condon had
three points from Todd Shaffer.
The second quarter was a fast-
paced, low-sconng quarter, much
like the first. Neiffer added to his
fouls with one more, making a
total of four. Shaffer led Condon
in scoring again, with five points,
lone’s Brad Burright had five
points and Neiffer had an addi
tional two points to make the sec
ond quarter score, 9-8, lone.
In the third quarter, the Cards
looked like they were tired com
ing out of the locker room. Con
don saw lone’s weakness and
started to take the lead. Still, lone
kept close to Condon Shaffer
wasn’t the only one to score for
Condon. Although he was the
leading scorer of the period with
11 points, David Bednard had
two. At the end of the third, the
score was Condon, 21, lone, 17.
At the beginning of the fourth
quarter, lone started playing bet
ter than they did in the third. The
Cards played tough and hard, but
Neiffer fouled out. Condon re
mained in control although lone
fought as hard as they could.
For Condon, Shaffer had four
points in the quarter, Randy
Camine had three points and
Mike Durfey had two. lone could
only score six, and lost the game,
30-24.
Coach Dale H olland said,
“Even though we played our best
game so far, we wore out too
fast.”
