down the Rockets in Pilot Rock,
on Friday, January 23, winning
52-37.The
Rockets
were
undefeated in CBC action prior
to Friday night's game. With this
big win the Mustangs evened the
win-loss record with the Rockets
at 3-1, and both teams were only
a half game back from Weston-
McEwen at 4-1.
With the Pilot Rock fans
refusing to sit down until the
Rockets first bucket, the
Mustangs raced to an 8-0 lead,
keeping the Rock fans on their
feet until Amber Evans hit a trey
with 2.33 minutes remaining in
the first quarter. At that point the
Rockets recovered from their
stall, putting in 11 unanswered
points to lead 11-8 after the first
eight minutes.
In the second quarter the
Mustangs were down by eight
points, 9-17, before they dug in
their heels to tie the score at 17,
then pulled ahead, 23-20, going
into the halftime break.
The Pilot Rock fans should be
grateful they don't stand until
their team posts a score in the
second half, as the Heppner
team held the Rockets scoreless
throughout the third quarter.
Meanwhile the Mustangs kicked
in 13 points to take at big 16
point lead, 36-20, after three
stanzas.
It was two and a half minutes
into the fourth quarter before
Amber Evans hit a free throw to
score Pilot Rock's 21st point.
Although the Rockets were able
to score an additional 16 points,
the Mustangs continued their
bucket brigade, pouring in 16
points in the final period to
clinch the win.

The junior varsity Mustang
girls watched the game slip away
on Saturday, January 24, losing
26-28 in the Wahtonka gym.
The Eagles full court press,
coupled with poor free throw
shooting by the young Mustang
squad effectively denied Heppner
the victory.
The Mustangs got off to a slow
start and trailed 2-9 at the end of
the first quarter. Six Heppner
players scored in the second
quarter while not allowing the
Eagles a single bucket and the
Mustangs pulled ahead 12-9 at
the halftime break.
The Mustangs were out-scored
7-12 in the third quarter to lose
the lead and the period ended
with Heppner behind 19-21. The
Mustangs tied the score at 21
points in the fourth quarter but
were unable to pull ahead and
Pettyjohns
lost by a measly two, 26-28.
Kim Pointer and Amy Papineau
shared top scoring for the
Mustangs with seven points each.
Pointer also pulled down six
rebounds, blocked three shots
and handed out an assist.
Papineau
grabbed
seven
rebounds and four steals while
blocking two shots.
Wahtonka's Jessie Ziegler led
all scorers with 11 points.

members and will remain in place
throughout its useful life.
A small memorial service, at
tended by family and friends, will
be held as the sign is installed.
As one family member said,
“The senseless loss of Jo and
Howard has been very painful to
us, but if just one person sees this
sign and4hinks twice before get
ting behind the wheel, then some
thing positive will have come out
of this tragedy.”

By Rick Paullus
The Heppner Mustangs varsity
boys traveled to Pilot Rock on
Friday, Jan. 23, to take on the
Rockets and lost a tough game,
79-72.
The Mustangs jumped out to a
5-0 lead before the Rockets got
their first points with 5:25 left in
the opening quarter. Chris An
thony hit a three-pointer to give
Heppner a 8-2 lead. The Rockets’
Shawn McLaughlin hit a jumper
and closed the gap to 8-6 before

and a three-pointer to give the
M ustangs a 13-7 lead. Pilot
Rock’s Jason Bensel hit a shot at
the buzzer to end the first quarter
with Heppner leading, 13-9.

outscore the Rockets 24-21 to
take a 37-30 lead at halftime. The
Mustangs hit four three-pointers
in the quarter with Shane Ma-
theny connecting on two of them.
Another high-scoring quarter

points with 3:30 left after Ma-
theny hit another three-pointer
and Tim Dickenson hit a jump
shot to give Heppner a 51 -36 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Mus
tangs opened with a 60-52 lead
on a Dickenson lay-in. The next
four minutes were see-saw as

points of the fourth quarter for the
Mustangs before Jared Eckman
made a free throw to give Hepp
ner a 68-65 lead. The Rockets tied
the score at 68-68 on a Bobby
Humphrey free throw and a
McLaughlin rebound and put
back.
The game was tied at 70-70
when McLaughlin scored six
straight points to give the Rock
ets a 76-70 lead. A late basket by
Derek Gunderson was not enough
as the Mustangs lost, 79-72.
Heppner was led by Dickenson
with 22 points and Anthony with
12 .
The Rockets were led by
McLaughlin’s 31 points and 14
rebounds.
