Travis Wilhelm
Travis Wilhelm has been
named to the East team of the
Shrine
East-West
All-Star
Football Game. Wilhelm, a
senior at Heppner High School,
is the son of Joe and Marina
Wilhelm of Heppner.
Wilhelm, 5T0" and 170
pounds, was selected as a
running back/strong safety.
Heppner High School football
coach Greg Grant has been
selected as an assistant coach for
the East Team.
Wilhelm is among 120 young
men selected for the honor and
Grant will join five other coaches
for this year's game, which will
be held Saturday, August 8, at
the Baker City High School
stadium.
Players and alternates are
selected solely by the coaches
and are chosen on a cross
sectional basis that considers
grade point status, athletic
ability, achievement, attitude,
personality, civic input and social
congeniality, said a Shnne news
release. Players and alternates are
submitted by their coaches from
Class A, AA and AAA league
schools. Each team will consist
of a 30-player first team and a
30-player
alternate
squad.
Alternate players are moved into
the player line-up if a player is
disqualified or cannot attend.
The 1997 season produced over
$84 thousand for the Shrine
Hospitals for Children. The East-
West Game has maintained
second place in fund raising in
North America. The Portland
Shrine Hospital is a research
hospital and one of the most
active patient hospitals within the
22 facilities operated by the
Shrine, according to the release.
Head coach for the East Team
will be Harry Hendrick of
Caldwell, ID. Assisting him
besides Grant will be Curt
Shelley of Redmond, Big Sky
League.
Head coach for the West Team
will be Neil Fuller of Roseburg,
Farwest League. His assistants
will be Bob Daugherty of
Albany, Tri-River League, and
Kevin Strasser, Beaverton, Casco
League.

JVs split over
weekend

The Heppner Mustangs JV bas­
ketball team split their games last
weekend, Jan. 23, beating Pilot
Rock, 68-45, and losing 54-47 to
the Wahtonka Eagles.
In the game against the Rock­
ets, the Mustangs jumped out to
a 17-7 lead after one quarter and
extended their lead to 38-24 at
halftime. The Mustangs contin­
ued their dominance in the sec­
ond half before winning, 68-45.
Michael Schonbachler led the
Mustangs with 14 points, making
eight of 11 free throws. Cody
Bellamy added 10 points as all the
Mustangs scored in the game.
After traveling to Pilot Rock on
Friday night, the Mustangs trav­
elled to The Dalles on Saturday,
Jan 24 to take on the Wahtonka
Eagles.
The Mustangslooked tired as
they could m uster only four
points in the first quarter and
trailed, 12-4. Heppner came out
in the second quarter pressing and
outscored the Eagles, 21 -9, to take
a 25-21 lead at halftime.
Wahtonka came out hot in the
third quarter, outsconng Heppner,
24-12, to take a 45-37 lead enter­
ing the fourth quarter. The Mus­
tangs couldn’t overcome the defi­
cit and lost, 54-47.
Schonbachler again led the
M ustangs in scoring with 12
points. Craig Scott added nine
points and Ryan Matteson scored
seven points.

girls lose to
Pilot Rock

The junior varsity Mustang
girls blew an 8-1 first quarter
lead in Pilot Rock on Friday,
January 23, losing 25-33 to the
Rocket JVs.
The Rockets
blasted in 12 points during the
second quarter while holding the
Mustangs to three and putting
Heppner down 11-13 at the half.
With each team managing to
score only six points in the third
quarter, the Mustangs continued
to trail by two points, 17-19,
after three. Pilot Rock out-
scored Heppner 14-8 in the final
period to clinch the win.

Kathleen
Greenup scored all eight of the
Mustangs' first quarter points and
four of the final period's eight,
but it wasn't enough to lift
Heppner past the Rockets.
Macy Rhea and Jessica Maben
each pulled down eight rebounds

Elks Hoop Shoot winners announced
The Heppner Elks Lodge #358
sponsored the local annual Elks
hoop shoot on January 18 at
Heppner High School. Kids from
Heppner, Lexington, lone, and
the surrounding area participated.

Gunderson, commented that this
year's turnout was much higher
than last year's.
Boys and girls were divided
into three separate age groups
and each contestant shot 25 free
throws. Those making the most
baskets will receive a trophy and
are eligible to compete at the
district hoop shoot which will be
held in Hermiston this Saturday,
January 31.
Second place winners received
an Elks "Say no to drugs"
basketball. The colorful purple
and white balls were donated by
the Heppner Lady Elks. First
Lady, Andrea Mortimore, said
that left over basketballs may be
purchased at the Elks Club for
$10 apiece while supplies last.
Additional balls may be ordered
if there is enough interest.
