Heppner JV girls lose to Riverside Pirates
By Molly R h aa
Lady Cardinals beat Pilot Rock Rockets
allowing the Pirates only seven,
but were unable to overcome the
deficit.
Riverside’s Irma Torrez led all
scorers with nine, and although
varsity starter Adrienne Wolf
was only eligible to play one
quarter, it was enough time for
her to toss in eight points.
Leading the Mustangs was
Ashley Ropp scoring six points
on a couple of treys. Allison
Sykes had five points and three
rebounds. Jessica Maben pulled
down eight rebounds and blocked
a shot, while Trisha Adams
grabbed six boards and dished
off two assists.
This loss puts the JV Mustang
girls' record at 2-1. With Echo
not sporting a JV girls' team and
the tournament this weekend
including only varsity teams,
these girls will not see action
again until January 2 when they
host lone.

The Heppner Mustangs started
the 1997-98 basketball season
with a 79-72 loss in overtime to
the Condon Blue Devils Tuesday,
Dec. 2.
The Mustangs started out hot,
jumping to a 10-0 lead with 5:50
left, but were outscored 15-5 over
the next five minutes and settled
for a 17-15 lead after one.
Heppner kept control in the
middle quarters, leading 38-32 at
halftime and 51-47 going into the
fourth quarter. The final quarter
was an exciting back-and-forth as
Condon would not let Heppner
pull away.
Tim Dickenson and Chris An
thony battled Brad Camine of
Condon for most of the quarter,
trading baskets at both ends of the
floor. Dickenson received a nice
pass from Derek Gunderson on a
lay-in to give Heppner a 67-65
lead, but Camine came right back
and tied it with 18 seconds left.
Gunderson just missed a three-
pointer at the buzzer to send the
game into overtime.
Condon scored the first six
points of overtime, but a lay-in by
Gunderson and two free throws
by Dickenson cut it to 73-71. The "
Blue Devils then made six free
throws to ice the game and take
the win.
The Mustangs were led by
Dickenson with 25 points, fol
lowed by Anthony with 18 points.
Shane Matheny scored eight and
Gunderson ended up with seven
