Mustangs celebrate

The
Columbia
Basin
Conference District volleyball
championship was determined in
a playoff game between the
Heppner Mustangs and the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-Scots at
the Umatilla gym on Thursday,
October 23. Winning 15-7, 15-4,
the Heppner Mustangs left no
doubt that the right team is in
possession of the CBC volleyball
trophy and winner board.
Game one started out with
Weston-McEwen acing the first
point, but that turned out to be
their first and last lead as Petra
Elguezabal shanked one off an
Amber Weatherspoon block for
the sideout. Jill Barber served up
Heppner's first point off a kill
from Annie Hisler. On the next
point attempt, Weatherspoon
blocked a hit for a Weston-
McEwen sideout.
The score stayed tied through
the next three sideouts, then
Amber Peck served point two on
a Jessica VanWinkle kill, and
points three and four on kills by
Mindy Bmschus to put the
Mustangs in the lead for good.
VanWinkle scored points five
through eight with two of those
coming from aces.
Binchus
scored point nine and Elguezabal
chipped in points 10 and 11, with
Lexi Matteson and Annie Hisler
teaming up to block a
Weatherspoon hit. At that point
the Heppner squad allowed the
Tiger-Scots to score point two
before Hisler dinked a ball to the
hardwood. Hisler then went back
to score Heppner’s point 12.
Weston-McEwen's
Amber
Heilman managed to score points
three
through
six before
VanWinkle put down a tip kill.
VanWinkle then went back to
ace point 13 and score 14 and
Weston-McEwen's Mary Green
scored a kill to create a Tiger-
Scot sideout.
The Tiger-Scots' Erika Smock
was able to score point seven,
then served into the net. Barber
stepped back to ace game point
to take game one 15-7.
With thé loss of the first game
the Tiger-Scots seemed to
crumple and the animated
Mustangs, with a boisterous
bunch of Heppner boosters, filled
the Umatilla gym with cheers.
The Mustangs continued their
attack throughout the second
game. Jill Barber was the first
League
server of the game and scored the
first eight points, with Annie
Hisler supplying one kill along
with two each from Lexi
Matteson and Petra Elguezabal,
along with one ace.
Weston-McEwen scored a point
before Heppner took the ball
back and Elguezabal scored
points nine and 10 off kills by
Matteson. Michelle Baumann
scored the last points Heppner
allowed before she committed a
service error.
Hisler served
points 11 through 14, with
Casey Ingraham blocking a hit
for a kill and acing point 14
before narrowly missing the
game point serve. Jill Barber put
down a kill for the next sideout,
the Mustangs were unable to
score off Ingraham's serve, then
Ingraham made a back row kill
for the final sideout. Mindy
Binschus scored game point off
an Elguezabal kill for the win
which sealed the Mustangs’ claim
on being the number one team in
the CBC.
The Mustangs served an
incredible 94 percent for the
match with 100 percent serving
coming from Amber Peck, 5/5,
Mindy Binschus, 4/4, and Lexi
Matteson and Casey Ingraham,
both 1/1. Jill Barber successfully
served 12/13, Annie Hisler went
7/8, and Petra Elguezabal served
6/7.
Seven Mustangs smashed down
kills in the match. Annie Hisler
successfully hit 11/13 with six
marked as kills, Matteson was
10/10 with four kills, Elguezabal
went 9/11 with five kills,
VanWinkle hit 5/7 with four
kills. Jill Barber hit 4/4 with
three kills, Binschus was 5/6 with
two kills and Casey Ingraham
went 2/2 with both hits resulting
in kills.
"The girls played a great game
and having the Heppner crowd
make the trip really gave us a
boost," said Coach Terri Gentry.
"We're excited to be going into
the state playoffs as the number
one seed."
With this win Heppner earns a
bye through the dogfight for the
second place CBC seed and will
host the second place team out
the Wapiti league on Saturday,
November 1, at 5 p.m.

before they knew it they had dug
a huge hole and were down 4-14.
Amy Drake, a 5'10" net player,
burned the Tiger defense with
superb hitting and blocking to
fire up a Heppner comeback.
New momentum behind setters
Abby Kahl and Ashley Ropp
helped rally the Mustangs, but it
proved to be too late and
Heppner lost the first game, 9-15.
The Mustangs rallied in the
"must-win" game two. Kahl and
Kim Pointer set the tone with
assists to Drake, Trisha Adams
and Amy Papineau to loosen the
claws of the young Tiger team.
Allison Sykes and Stephanie
Clough provided the passes and
Heppner pulled out a 15-13 win.
The Mustangs controlled the
momentum in game three with
strong team play. Drake, playing
an outstanding hitter's game,
continued to lead the Heppner
squad at the net.
Pointer
displayed excellent all around
skills in the back row, with
strong net play as well as
consistent serving. Leah Denton
also contributed outstanding play
with accurate passing and
successful hitting. Heppner won
the game and the match 15-10.
The Heppner Cs outplayed the
LaGrande team in every aspect,
winning the match 13-15, 15-12,
