Week of September 8
brought to you by The Heppner Chamber of
Commerce (541) 676-5536
MAIN STREET WEEKLY
REPORT
ODOT Inspector Brent Reynolds reports that the project is
moving forward and if the temperature specs hold, paving and
major concrete work should be finished by the October completion
date. Reynolds stated that Heppner has been the most supportive
of all the projects he has been involved with.
-CURB MACHINE will arrive this week. Set up of stnng for
curb grades will be moving forward. The eastside will move
slower than the westside since the bulbs will go in at the same
time.
-BULBS, BUMPOUTS, BUBBLES, your choice. Regardless of
the name, these protrusions on each comer will be a safety asset
for the Heppner business district. Their appearance will cause
traffic to slow; parking areas will be more obvious; crossing the
street will mean navigating 26 feet of street, rather than 68 feet,
making the shortened pedestrian distance safer for everyone,
especially handicapped, young children, and senior citizens.
-WATER has been off periodically, and your understanding of
the problems causing this has been most appreciated. If your water
heater has no back-flow and problems resulted, please check with
your insurance company.
- LUMINARIES (decorative street lights) have arrived. The
holes continue to be put in place. When both utility strips are
ready and Weaver Construction gives the okay, the city will stand
them in place. The only visible power lines on Main Street will be
at May Street. Columbia Basin deserves recognition for making
the wireless Main Street possible. It's going to look great.
- CONCRETE WORK. After this week, sub-contractors will be
completing the concrete work. The brick pavers will arrive soon
for the utility strip.
-TREES. Approximately 45 trees will be lining Mam and May
Streets. All but 10 have been spoken for. Please drop by or call
the Chamber off ice if you wish to "purchase" a tree. The trees
(Century Crimson Norway Maple, Spring Snow Crabapple,
Redspire Gallery Pear, and Chantilleer Pear) will be planted in the
"bulbs" and the utility strips in the spring. Much research has been
done on the tree species for the utility strip in Heppner. Top soil,
which meets specifications, will be hauled in and there will be
underground irrigation to the trees. In 1991, the trees began as a
total Chamber project, but with the Main Street Renovation and
grant process, the tree project is now part of the overall city
project, meaning that bids must be taken by the city fpr purchase
of the trees.
The Chamber's role will enable the brick
identification and the purchase of larger, sturdier trees.
- MAIN STREET. Nine inches of asphalt with a two foot gravel
base should make for a strong and lasting Mam Street. If certain
areas do not meet specs for strength after a 28-day test period,
then that portion will be redone. Please have patience. The end
result will be worth it.
-HARD HAT GREAT ESCAPE. Remind your customers to pick
up their punch cards which make them eligible to win three nights
at their choice of twelve luxury vacation sites, some within driving
distance. The drawing will occur at a special celebration in late
fall. The more punchcards, the more chances one has to escape.
Vacation may be taken between November 1997 and November
1998.
-KEVIN ERICH and his family will be greatly missed by the
Heppner community. Erich has been a tremendous asset to the
Heppner Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, contributing
energy, enthusiasm, honesty and integrity during his years of
service. Heppner's loss is another community's gam and we wish
the Erichs well as they pilrsue new life adventures.
Stepping in to f ill the board vacancy is Trish Sweeney, manager
of Murray's Country Rose. Sweeney's retail expertise and
creativity will be an asset to the Chamber Board of Directors.
They look forward to working with her.
