Power Rents rodeo team to perform
Matney to join OW GL staff
Tammy Matney of Vancouver,
Washington, will join the staff of
the Oregon Wheat Growers
League (OWGL) as its new
director of member services. She
will be primarily responsible for
support and coordination of
county programs, working with
associate
members
and
designing membership programs.
Reared in The Dalles, Matney
spent five years working in the
Wasco
County
District
Attorney's office as a legal
assistant.
Currently, she is
completing work for a bachelor's
degree in business management
and communications. She has
also been certified by the
Convention Liaison Council in
Washington, D.C., as a certified
meeting planner (CMP), one of
only 1 1 CMPs in Oregon.
Matney has spent the last four
years with the Oregon Wheat
Commission in Portland, most
recently as acting administrator.
She also served the commission
as the associate administrator.
Rose Festival Parade Association
for six out of the last eight years.
The team, sponsored by Power
Rents, includes Stephanie Crop,
Mary Eldred, Loyce Gilpin,
Kristin Klein (not pictured),

Tanya

Team members say that Power

Centennial exchange student returns

Heppner Junior High School
(HJHS) eighth-grader Brian Rust
and his family were able to host
their Centennial Middle School
exchange student a second time.
Centennial eighth graders came
to the Heppner-Lexington area in
May for a week-long stay with
HJHS students and their families.
But. the Rusts' exchange student,
Joe Ciota, wanted to visit again
and experience harvest.
Football and volleyball practice
for lone High School students
will be held Monday through
Friday August 18-22 and 25-29.
lone football players will have
daily doubles beginning at 7 a.m.
and 6:30 p.m. Their first game
will be at the Dufur Jamboree on
Friday, August 29.
lone volleyball players will
have practice from 6-9 p.m.
Their first game will be
Thursday, Sept. 4, at Heppner at
5 p.m. for both varsity and junior
varsity players.
A meeting of lone volleyball
players and their parents will be
held on Monday, August 18, at 6
p.m. at the school.

Daily doubles for Heppner High
School football and volleyball
teams will be held Monday,
August 18, through Friday,
August 22.
Daily doubles for Heppner
football will be held from 7-9
a.m. and 4-6 p.m.
Heppner volleyball daily
doubles will be from 9-11 a.m.
and 5:30-7:30 p.m. except for
evening practice Thursday,
August 21. Evening practice that
day will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
with swimming at the Willow
Creek Waterpark from 9-10 p.m.,
dinner at HHS from 10-11 p.m.,
more volleyball from 11 p.m.-
midmght, followed by a sleep-
over at the gym and more
practice Friday morning. Their
first game will be Thursday,
Sept. 4, against lone at home at 5
p.m. with varsity, junior varsity
and C-team players.
A meeting for Heppner
volleyball players and their
parents will be Tuesday, Aug. 19,
at 5:15 p.m. at the HHS home ec
room.

Apply now for special hunts
Power Rents Rodeo Team
The Power Rents Rodeo Team,
who will appear at the Oregon
Trail Pro Rodeo Saturday,
August 16, in Heppner, has been
entertaining fans at parades and
rodeos throughout the Northwest
for over 10 years.
These young women, all from
Washington
County,
have
combined their love of horses
and riding into a mounted drill
team that performs difficult
precision maneuvers with their
horses at high speed. This team
has received many awards from
local area parades including first
place honors from the Portland

Agriculture in the Classroom
program, Meeting Professionals
International, and the Oregon
Junior Miss
scholarship
program.
Matney will make her home in
Pendleton with her two children.
She will join the OWGL staff
on August
18 and will
concentrate
initially
on
coordinating fall meetings with
county presidents. Additional
responsibilities will include
membership expansion and
retention,
coordination
of
member benefits and assisting in
OWGL outreach programs.
Matney will also serve as the
administrator o f the Oregon
Grains Commission the state's
barley growers, replacing Julie
Newtson in that position.
"I consider it to be an honor to
serve the growers of Oregon and
look forward to working with the
Oregon Wheat Growers League,"
Matney said. OWGL Executive
Vice President Daren Coppock
said Matney's energy and skills
will be a valuable addition to the
OWGL team.
lone, Heppner daily doubles begin
Brian and Joe talked on the
phone several times since the
exchange and the two were able
to visit in person when Joe's dad,
Stan, brought him back to stay
with the Rust family on their
farm on Buttercreek.
Joe rode on the combine with
Brian who has been driving truck
during harvest. Joe got to help
move service rigs and was
excited about driving a pickup,
says Brian's mother, Shannon.
Waterfowl and upland bird
hunters should apply now for the
special reservation hunts held at
the McCormack Slough Unit of
the Umatilla National Wildlife
Refuge and the McKay Creek
National Wildlife Refuge.
The Umatilla Refuge is now
accepting
reservation
applications for the McCormack
Unit Waterfowl Hunt, located
three miles west of Irrigon.
Applications must be postmarked
by September 2 for the hunt
season on this unit.
Any
waterfowl hunter wanting to
apply for an advance reservation
for this popular hunt should
obtain an application from the
Mid-Columbia River National
Wildlife
Refuge
Complex
Headquarters, 830 Sixth Street,

Successful applicants will
receive numbers designating the
order of blind selection. After
successful
applicants
have
selected their hunting sites,
unoccupied sites will be filled by
standby hunters according to a
drawing conducted at the hunter
check station each hunt morning.
As a reminder, hunt fees have
been amended on all controlled
waterfowl hunts within all
National Wildlife Refuges within
the Pacific Region. Beginning
this hunt season there will be a
non-refundable $3 application
fee, which must be submitted
with your application. Make
checks payable to U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service.
In addition, blind fees for
reservation and standby hunters
have been reduced to $5 per
hunter or $10 per blind
(whichever is more) and are
payable al the time of the hunt.
Also, a $50 season pass is
available this year and may be
purchased at the hunter check
station.
As always, there is no fee for
youth hunters aged 15 years or
younger. Holders of Golden Age
or Golden Access Cards pay half
price for hunt fees (daily hunt fee
or season pass).
Upland game bird hunters may
apply to hunt opening weekend
on the McCormack Unit by
sending a postcard with their
name, address and day they wish
to hunt, Saturday or Sunday, to
Umatilla Refuge Upland Hunt,
P.O. Box 700, Umatilla OR
97882. Selected hunters will be
allowed two permits.
A $5
reservation fee will be charged at
the unit on the day of the hunt.
Applications for this hunt must
be postmarked by September 15.
To apply for a Youth Hunt Day,
Saturday December 6, or
Tuesday, December 30, send a
standard postcard with your
name and address and words
"Youth Hunt Day" on it. Youth
must be 10 to 17 years old to
participate in this hunt, have a
hunter safety card and must be
accompanied by an adult
companion at least 21 years old.
Reservation and blind fees will
be waived for youth hunters and
their companions for the Youth
Hunt. Applications for the Youth
Hunt must be postmarked by
November 1.
Hunters wishing to apply for
permits to hunt upland birds on
opening day, October 18, at the
McKay Creek National Wildlife
Refuge outside Pendleton must
send a $2 application fee, along
with their name, address and the
name "McKay Refuge" to
McKay Creek Refuge Hunt, P.O.
Box 700, Umatilla OR 97882. If
selected, each hunter will receive
two permits for the Saturday
hunt. McKay Creek NWR will
not be open to hunting on
Sunday, October 19.
