One hundred, sixty-seven
people enjoyed the open house
and free swim sponsored by the
W illow Creek Park D istrict
(WCPD) at their newly opened
waterpark facility Saturday, Aug.

man, kicked off the celebration
with a dedication of the pool to
all the young people of South
Morrow County. “This project
was the result of five years of
dedication and hard work by pub
lic and private groups,” said
Matthews during the dedication.
“This is a wonderful facility,
something everyone can be proud
of, and everyone of all ages can
enjoy for many years to come.”
The Heppner Elementary third
graders led the audience in a spe
cial song, “Roll on W illow
Creek.”
Special recognition plaques
were then presented to Kay Proc
tor of People for the Pool fund
raising group, and Matthews to
thank them for their work on the
project over the past five years.
Proctor was also presented a
thank you rose from Matthews
and the park district. “As a mem
ber and one of the founders of the
fund raising group ‘People for the
Pool,’ Kay was always out there,
keeping this goal o f having a
swimming pool for our kids in the
public eye and we thank her for
her efforts,” said Matthews.
Matthews recognized People
for the Pool for their donation of
$135,000 to the indoor multi-use
pool and also recognized their
donation of $10,000 to the over
all waterpark project.
Roses were presented to the
w aterpark m anagers-Sarah
C arlson, Karen Morgan and
George Naims, in recognition of
their hard work in getting the pool
up and running.
The dedication was topped off
with the release of red, white, blue
and green balloons. Lifeguard
Macy Rhea and Donald and
Whitney Matthews did the hon
ors of cutting the balloons loose.
BEO sponsors student workshop
Six hundred student leaders
from around the state recently
attended the Oregon Association
of Student Councils Summer
Leadership Workshops with the
help
of the
Independent
Community Banks of Oregon
(ICBO), including the Bank of
Eastern Oregon in Heppner.
This is the sixth year that ICBO
has sponsored the workshops,
which have provided leadership
training to high school and
middle school students for over
twenty years.
The two high school workshops,
held at Willamette University in
Salem, offered sessions on

August 15, and 1:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon,
August 16, at the Fair and Rodeo grounds in
Heppner.
24 mutton-busters will be bucked 1/2 hour prior
to the performance.
Also featured will be specialty act “The Olsons”
with a buffalo and trick horse; clown/barrelman
Flint Rasmussen; professional rodeo announcer
Steve Kenyon; and bullfighters Danny Newman
and Mark Nichols.

“Macy has always believed in this
project, even as a little girl,” said
Matthews. “I felt it was only ap
propriate that she be allowed the
honor o f helping dedicate it. As
for Donald and Whitney, they
represent the kids coming up that
will benefit from having a swim
ming pool.”
Also during the dedication,
past WCPD board members Ken
Turner, Nancy Snider and Bob
Kahl were honored for their ser
vice to the people of the district.
The WCPD provided free hot
dogs, cookies and lemonade all
day long for those attending the
open house.

The Morrow County Jackpot Rodeo for
Morrow County residents and school
alumni will be held Sunday, August 17 start
ing at 1:15 p.m. Slack for team roping will
start at 10 a.m.
Cost: $5; children 6 and under free

time management, goal setting
and project planning. Students
planned projects to take back to
their schools and communities.
Students had the opportunity to
hear both Governor Kitzhaber
and Secretary of State Keisling
speak to them in the State
Capitol during their ethics
session.
Delegates

community
services by cleaning local parks
and Mill Creek.
The middle school workshop,
held at Aldersgate Conference
Center near Salem, offered
young leaders an opportunity to
learn new leadership skills
through activity-based sessions.
They also had a variety of guest
speakers.
