Work continues on Lex convenience store
The new convenience store
under construction in Lexington
will definitely be a convenience
for Lexington, Heppner and lone
residents and travelers passing
through
town.The
CENEX
Convenience Store, owned and
operated by Morrow County
Grain Growers (MCGG), is
situated so that it will allow for
entry for vehicles from both
Hwy, 207 and Hwy. 74.
The store will offer more
grocery items than generally
found in convenience stores, says
manager Carolyn Blodgett. In
addition to the usual items, such
as pop, beer, ice cream, chips,
dips, snacks and gum, the store
will offer gas, diesel, propane
and pumping for card lock, a
small line of automotive products
and health and beauty aids.
MCGG
will also assume
responsibilities at the store for
postal service in Lexington.
Blodgett says that plans are to
landscape the area outside of the
store and perhaps put picnic
tables in a grassy area.
"We see our role as being an
integral part o f the community
and having the community be a
part o f us," said Blodgett. "We
want to operate a store that is
friendly and that people enjoy
coming to. We want to put a lot
o f emphasis on service."
Blodgett says that the store's
opening date is still tentative.
MCGG is targeting late August
or the first part o f September,
depending on how construction
proceeds. The store will operate
seven days a week from 6 a.rn. to
10 p.m. "We will be flexible,
depending on activities in the
community," adds Blodgett."lf
there's a need to be there, such as
after a game or other activity, we
will."
Blodgett says that CENEX
convenience stores, which are
mostly associated with co-ops in
rural areas, have been rated 26 or
27 out o f 1,000 stores throughout
the U.S. CENEX is based in the
Midwest. Since she was hired,
Blodgett has undergone training
in finances and merchandising
and has also traveled to several
different convenience stores to
take a look at their operations.
Blodgett says that MCGG plans
to hire around five-six full-time
employees and around four-five
part-time employees to staff the
store and intends to hire some
area youth. Hired as manager in
mid-June, Blodgett says, "I've
done everything so far from
talking to vendors to deciding
where electrical outlets will be

placed. Blodgett credits MCGG
general manager Larry Mills for
his big role in construction o f the
store. "He is a wonderful person
who is very involved in
community affairs," she says.
Blodgett, herself a "people
person", also has a lot of
experience in business. When she
first moved to Heppner in 1984,
she worked as a senior services
Raymond B. Ferguson, came into
the business in 1927, making it
"Brothers." They sold Chevrolet
cars and trucks and Shell
gasoline at this location until
they sold the business in 1944.
Gene farmed in Sand Hollow
for many of the years that he was
also working the garage.
He is
a life member o f the Heppner
Elks Lodge.
Gene and Fay left Heppner in
May o f 1972, moving to
Hermiston.
They have lived
there for most o f the time since,
except for about two years in the
Portland area while Fay was in a
home,
suffering
from
Alzheimer's. Fay died February
3, 1996. They had been married
nearly 73 years.
Gene moved back to Hermiston
in June, living with his grandson.
Gene would appreciate hearing
from any o f his friends who
would be interested in writing to
him. The address is: Eugene 0.
Ferguson, Rt. 5 Box 5908,
Hermiston, OR 97838
Since Gene was bom August 8,
1898, he has now lived in two
centuries.
His goal in life, at
this time, says his family, is to
live in three centuries, which
means he has to reach at least
January 1, 2001.

Hermiston, which she started

Blodgett says that she liked the
Heppner-Lexington area "right
from the beginning". After
initially living in Heppner for a
short while in 1984, she moved
to Hermiston and worked in

1989, when she moved to Blake
