The Columbia Tri-Co. 13 year
old Babe Ruth All-Star team, con-
sisting o f players from the
Heppner, Condon, Boardman,
Imgon, Umatilla, Stanfield and
Echo area, grabbed the second
place trophy at the district tour
nament held July 4-9 at
Hermiston.
The Tri-Co. team won the first
game they played on July 5,
downing the Pendleton Ameri
cans 14-1, in a game shortened to
five innings because of the 10 run
mercy rule.
The local squad’s second game
was also a five inning game with
the Tri-Co. team winning 13-1
against The Dalles American
team.
The third game for the Colum
bia Tri-Co. team was against the
tough Pendleton Nationals. The
two teams were the only unde
feated teams left in the tourna
ment and the game’s winner
would get to sit out until Wednes
day in the championship round.

winning 11-5 in five innings,”
said Tri-Co. manager Rick
Johnston.
Next up for the team was the
once beaten Hermiston National
team. The Hermiston team would
have had to beat Columbia Tri-
Co. twice to win the champion
ship.
.The first game between the two
teams was tied 3-3 in the top of
the seventh inning when the
Hermiston squad exploded for
seven unanswered runs and a 10 -
3 victory, setting up a final game
for the championship.
In the championship game,
Columbia Tri-Co. jumped out to
a 4-0 lead after their half of the
first inning. Hermiston came
storming back with three runs in
the bottom of the same inning on

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class
Christian M. Cannon, whose
wife, Gloria, is the daughter of
Gene Peterson of Irrigon,
recently completed the aviation
electrician's mate course located
at Naval Aviation Technical
Training Center, Pensacola, Fla.
During the five-month course,
Cannon received training in
electrical theory and circuitry
which will prepare him to work
on the electrical components of
jet aircraft.
Cannon also studied a variety of
aircraft electrical systems
including
electro-hydraulic,
automatic flight control, and
electrical power generation and
distribution.
Cannon recently reenlisted for
five years. The 1990 graduate of
East Newton High School of
Granby, Mo., joined the Navy in
June 1991.

the game and the championship
to the Hermiston Nationals, 12-

Stars had the best 13 year old
group of kids in many years,”
said Johnston, “and finished with
the second place trophy. The fu
ture for baseball in all of the com
munities represented by the Tri-
Co. team looks very positive.”

for Heppner and lone students at
the Pioneer Memorial Clinic in
Heppner on Tuesday and
Wednesday, July 29 and 30.
All sophomores and seventh
graders interested in participating
in school athletics dunng the
1997-98 school year must have a
physical as do new students and
those participating for the first
time.
The physicals will be-
administered from 6-8 p.m. with
boys receiving their physicals on
Tuesday and the girls on
Wednesday. All students need to
complete a medical history form
with parental signature prior to
receiving a physical examination.

teers who shingled the roof of the
Willow Creek Water Park’s new
building. These volunteers worked
hard at their own jobs at the U.S.
Forest Service, the Morrow
County Road Department and the
Heppner School District, and then
spent nearly 300 evening and
weekend hours up on a hot roof.
