Jim Bordenet, Postal inspector
and public information officer,
Seattle Division, and Mike
McGuire, Heppner Postmaster,
are alerting area residents and
business owners of a fraud
scheme
being
perpetrated
through the mail, FAX, Internet
or telephone.
According to Bordenet, small
business owners in the Heppner
area have been the target of an
"old
fashioned
confidence
swindle purportedly offering
huge sums of money from the
Nigerian government." Bordenet
says that the target usually
receives a letter from a Nigerian
government "official", often
claiming to be a doctor, prince,
chief, accountant or head
engineer, who says that a huge
sum of money has been
discovered during an audit of
Nigerian contract payments of
the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corp He says that the funds had
been set aside to pay foreign
contractors and the funds are
available to the business people
because of some billing error.
The official needs someone (a
U S. business) to take the funds
out of Nigeria, but up-front
money, supposedly for taxes or
to bribe a government official, is
required before the final payout
can be made. The perpetrator of
the scam asks that the business'
bank account be used for the
deposit of the funds and says that
the business will receive 30
percent
of
the
amount
transferred. O f course "the only
money going out belongs to the
American
victim,"
says
Bordenet.
Bordenet says that some
business people have even
traveled to Nigeria and some
have admitted paying $300,000-
