Congratulations to 1997 graduates
To the Editor:
Congratulations 1997 gradu
ates!
You have reached a turning
point in your life-your graduation
from high school. I want to take
this opportunity to congratulate
you on this special occasion. As
you well know, not everyone who
starts high school successfully
finishes as you have. You are to
be commended for your achieve
ment.
While you may be viewing
upon graduation as an end to an
important stage o f your life, I
strongly encourage you to con-
sider this commencement a bright
beginning to whatever comes
next.
I wish the best for your future
plans.
“We cannot always build the
future for our youth, but we can
build our youth for the future.”-
Franklin D. Roosevelt, speech
given at University of Pennsylva
nia, Sept. 20, 1940.
Sincerely,
(s) Representative

Opportunity to dispel rumors
To the Editor:
It has come to my attention that
there is a rumor circulating that
‘ while on call here I did not re
spond to an emergency for four
hours.
I hate to dignify such gossip by
repeating it, but at the same time,
I cannot let such a serious accu
sation go by without comment.
1 have invested seven years in
medical training and 10 years in
practice since. I take my job seri
ously and always strive to be con
scientious, caring and thorough,
some have even said compulsive,
in taking care of my patients. I
can’t imagine being unavailable

Local blood drive set for June 26
While everyone looks forward
to the spring's arrival, warmer
weather and sunny sides can
present problems for American
Red Cross Blood Services. As
the mercury climbs, blood
donations fall. The need for
blood, however, is constant.
Nearly 800 pints of blood must be
collected daily to maintain an
adequate regional blood supply.
Healthy adults can help ensure
blood is available for patients
needing transfusions this spring
by giving blood at St. Patrick's
Senior Center, 182 N. Main in
Heppner, on Thursday, June 26,
from 2- 6pm. Donors must be 17
or older, weigh at least 105
pounds and be in good general
health.
To schedule a donation
appointment or for more
information, call the American
Red Cross, at 1(800) 868-9057.

awards
scholarship
A Portland family awarded
Heppner High School (HHS) se
nior Brandi Marshall a college
scholarship for $ 1,000 plus addi
tional amounts to pay for most or
all the cost of books and materi
als during her college career, said
a news release from the John W.
Lulich family, grantors o f the
scholarship.
“The fam ily was very im
pressed with Marshall’s singing
and acting talents, as well as her
academic achievements, commu
nity service, but most of all her
honesty and worm heart towards
others,” they said.
The total scholarship amount
was extended to also award HHS
senior Richard Worden a $500
amount towards his college goals.
“He was recognized for his hard
work, ethics and goals in agricul
ture,” they said.
The scholarship was given out
exactly two years later to the date
and hour that John W. Lulich
passed away. “He was a loving
dad of 12 children whom loved
to bring his family to the area for
hunting and camping,” said the
release. “He always talked about
giving something back to the
community so the family thought
a scholarship was fitting.”
for four hours when on call (and,
of course, this never happened).
This sort of talk slanders me,
and moreover paints a negative
picture of the care delivered at the
hospital, which is not to anyone’s
advantage.
I don’t know what other false
rumors are circulating about me,
but I would appreciate the oppor
tunity to dispel them firsthand. If
anyone really wants to know what
has gone on or is going on with
me, you are welcome to call me,
either here (676-5896) or better,
leave me a message at (503) 371 -
