Local group walks in MS fundraiser

The Oregon Wheat Growers
League (OWGL) and the Oregon
Wheat Commission have sched
uled a forum on Plant Variety
Protection (PVP) for Friday, June
6, in lone. The session will be
held in the American Legion Hall
in lone, starting at 8 a.m.
The Com m ission and the
League are organizing this forum
so growers may leam more about
PVP and advise the two groups
on whether Oregon should pursue
PVP releases on new varieties
developed with Commission sup
port at Oregon State University
or elsewhere.
OWGL president Mike Kortge
will begin the forum and will in
troduce two panels of speakers for
brief presentations. A question
and answer period will follow af
ter the panels.
OWGL’s State Conservation
Field Day follows on the same
day, at the Eric and M arnie
Anderson farm outside of lone.
Bus transportation will be avail
able from the PVP forum to the
Anderson farm for the barbecue
luncheon and conservation tour.

The American Legion and
Auxiliary will hold its regular
meeting Monday, April 28, with
a potluck at 6:30 p.m. in the base
ment of the Methodist Church in
Heppner.
The Legion Auxiliary will have
initiation for all the new mem
bers.
Members and veterans are wel
come to attend.
Kindergarten Visitation
Kindergarten visitation will be held at Heppner Elementary'
on Friday, May 9, from 8 a.m .-12 p.m. Visitation is for any
child who will be attending kindergarten this fall. Children
must be five by Sept. 1. Please bring birth certificate and

public town plant exchange will
be held this Saturday, April 26,
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St.
Patrick Senior Center.
The exchange is open to all
area gardeners.

College Board of Directors have
outlined a tentative visitation
schedule for the two college
presidential candidates. Dr.
Virginia Harington and Dr.
Gregory Fitch will visit the area
Thursday and Friday, May 1-2.
The Morrow County visitation
schedule is as follows:
Thursday, May 1: Dr. Fitch:
7:30 a.m.-breakfast with board
members Nancy Snider, who
will serve as tour guide, Cindy
Purcell and Joe Green at Red
Lion Restaurant; 8:30 a.m.,
arrive on campus, staff visitation
in College Union; 10 a.m., leave
for Morrow County; 11 a.m.,
arrive in Lexington, visit
Heppner; noon-lunch in lone; 1
p.m., leave for Boardman; 1:45
p.m., arrive at Port of Morrow;
2:30 p.m., leave for Pendleton;
3:30 p.m., arrive in Pendleton,
free time; 5:30 p.m., pick up
candidate; 6 p.m., tour farm and
mechanics labs; 6:30 p.m.,
community forum in College
Union, answer questions; 7 p.m.,
reception for candidates in
College Union.
The schedule for Dr. Harrington
on Friday, May 2, is identical up
until 3:30 p.m. when a final
interview with the board is
scheduled in the board room.
The two candidates will also
tour Umatilla County on
alternate days. Phillip Houk,
board member from Pendleton,
will serve as tour guide and
escort for the Umatilla County
visit.

On Thursday evening, a
community forum will be held at
allow area residents and college
staff an opportunity to meet Drs.
Harrington and Fitch. The forum
will start at 6 p.m., with a
structured
question/answer
session with Harrington. At 6:30
p.m., Fitch will have an
opportunity to answer the same
questions. A reception for the
candidates will be held beginning
at 7 p.m. Both the forum and
reception will be held in the
BMCC College Union in Pioneer
Hall.
Final interviews will be held
Friday afternoon. The board w'lll
meet again on Saturday in
executive session to discuss their
impressions of the candidates
following this second visit.
