boxes and other assistance for the
exchangers.
Representatives from the local
Master Gardeners will be present
to answer questions.
A space will also be provided
for "garden talk" over cookies
and coffee.
"We think that this event can
bring
new
plants,
new
information, new gardening
friends and a more beautiful
town," said the spokesperson.
The Heppner Garden Club will
sponsor their fifth annual public
Town Plant Exchange Saturday,
April 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at

Club spokesmen stress that this

without cost, said a club
spokesperson.
The
only
requirement for participants is
that they bring plants, which
could include vegetables, trees,

Coast to Coast
merger
approved
The independent owners of
True Value and ServiStar Coast
to Coast stores voted on April 1
to consolidate their buying power
and resources in one wholesale
company.
The new company, TruServ
Corporation, is the world's
largest wholesaler of hardware
and related products aimed at the
"do-it-yourselfer" market, with
expected annual sales of $4.5
billion, said a company news
release.
The creation of TruServ will
strengthen
the independent
retailer who is a member of the
wholesale co-op, said the release.
"TruServ's dominant position as
the largest hardware wholesaler
will enable it to negotiate for
better prices on merchandise,"
they said.
Cliff Green, owner of the Coast
to Coast Store in Heppner, says
he believes the merger will give
him the advantage he needs to
compete with chain stores and
giant home centers. "By merging
together, we have created the
largest hardware and related
product buying cooperative in the
country. This puts us in a strong
negotiating position and will
result in lower costs for store
owners and that translates into
lower costs for our customers,"
said Green. "The huge home
center stores can not match our
friendly and knowledgeable
service. And with the price gap
narrowed, we are even better
prepared to make them lifetime
customers."
No store names are affected by
the merger, so customers can
continue to shop at Coast to
Coast. Store hours are 8 a.m. to 6
p.m.
The merger, which was
unanimously approved by the
boards of directors of both
wholesalers on December 9,
1996, was approved by over 95
percent of the True Value and
ServiStar Coast to Coast retailers
casting ballots.
