Lisa Nelson was the guest
speaker at the lone Topic Club
meeting held recently at the home
o f Jean N elson, w ith Kathy
Morter as co-hostess.
Nelson reviewed the book “The
Persian Pickle Club” by Sandra
Dallas. This is a “humorous story
of the Depression in Kansas.”
The setting is a quilting group
called The Persian Pickle Club.
The second book reviewed was
“Children o f the Flam es” by
Lucette Lagnada and Sheila
Dekel, about Dr. Josef Mengele’s
medical experiments with twins in
Auschwitz. Much of the informa
tion for the book came from “the
survivors of that terrible time and
their search for Mengele to de
stroy him as he did his victims.”
During the business meeting,
plans were discussed for the din
ner the club will serve to the 150
Oregon Trail cyclists on Friday,
May 9. The members will have a
table at the Indoor Garage Sale at
the Legion Hall on Saturday, April
19. The next event of the club will
be the lone High School senior
girls’ tea on Thursday, April 24.

woodlands association has
purchased a "weed-a-metre"
granule applicator. This device
can be used to spread pronone
which is a dry granular
formulation o f Velpar, a grass
killing herbicide.
This device will apply a
m easured dose o f herbicide in
a four-foot circle around a tree
seedling when grass/moisture
control is necessary for a new
tree seedling survival and
growth.
This device is available for
loan to non-industrial small
w oodland owners for use in
establishing
new
tree
plantings.

SUPPLEM ENTAL B UD G ET HEARING
Sure and begorra, 'tis a fact that a small tow n's efforts can
impact the weather. All that hot air and blarney for St. Patrick's
w eekend festivities somehow caused the air tem perature to rise
40 degrees by late Saturday afternoon.
Even the leprechauns didn't go into hiding when they woke up
to a fresh dusting o f snow that morning. And though storm
clouds were threatening, the parade went o ff without a hitch.
The year-round work o f the St. Patrick's com m ittee plus the
m any w illing volunteers proves that a small town can
successfully stage a m ajor production that attracts visitors from
far and near. For people who could not attend, they missed a
great variety o f high class entertainm ent-singing, music and
Irish clogging—without having to brave outside elements.
Aside from the fun and frolic and visiting and renewing
acquaintances, the heritage o f this county was brought to life at
the M orrow County Museum. Domestic scenes o f pioneer life
were depicted by appropriately costum ed young people. These
youngsters dem onstrated how pioneers who founded this area
made do without m odem conveniences. The old clothes wringer,
the hand-powered butter chum, the stove-heated flatirons and the
spinning o f wool were all dem onstrated while a steady crowd
circulated through the museum.
And everyone can claim to be Irish while enjoying this *
celebration. Though it’s a homecoming type o f affair, each year
it attracts more visitors who seem to enjoy the cam araderie and
the entertainment. M eanwhile no one needed to go hungry as
there w ere delicious food offerings throughout the town. Even
late night revelers were rewarded with a hearty breakfast by
daw n's early light, courtesy o f the H eppner volunteer firemen.
A long w ith elbow bending and dancing, entertainment also
included motorcross racing, team roping and the sheep dog trials
that attracted many spectators. Now that the 15th annual St.
Patrick's celebration is history, it has proven to be the best way
to chase away the doldrums o f a long dreary winter. What better
w ay to turn the com er into springtime. This traditional event is
a truly fitting tribute to our rural way o f life and the early settlers.
Game night at Stokes Landing
in Irrigon will be held on
Friday, M arch 28 beginning
with dinner at 5 p.m..
Card games follow at 7 p.m.
Cost is $3 for the dinner and
$1 for games. Everyone is
invited to attend.
