Pf^school plans Scholarship
"Hop-A-Thon" applications
The Heppner Daycare Pre­
school has just finished a program
entitled, “ The Back Is Where It’s
At!” This program emphasizes to
parents that the safest place for
children is in the back seat of a
vehicle.
The preschool would like to
share the teaching aides with other
child care providers or parents.
They have also planned their
Muscular Dystrophy “Hop-A-
Thon” on Thursday, March 28, at
10 a.m. Any three or four year
old who lives in the community is
invited to take part.

District is again accepting appli­
cations from high school seniors
for the Troedson Grant Scholar­
ship. Applications are available
through the counselors at Hepp­
ner High School, lone High School,
and Riverside High School,
The deadline for application
materials to be returned is Thurs­
day, April 17. For more informa­

Jim W ishart displays the Ruger M77R Mark II rifle now
being raffled o ff by the Heppner Lion's Club. The rifle also
includes a 3X9 - 40mm Tasco world class scope. Only 400
tickets will be sold and they are $5 each or five tickets for S20.
D raw ing will be held May 1, and tickets may be purchased
from W ishart at 676-9018, Steve Rhea at 676-9113, Rollie
M arshall at 676-9125 or David Sykes at 676-9228. Proceeds
from the raffle will be used by the Lion's Club to benefit the
local community.
Easter Services
Hope Lutheran
Hope Lutheran Church of
Heppner will hold the following
Holy Week Easter Services:
On Palm Sunday, March 23, at
H a.m., the congregation will
gather at the main door and
narthex to receive palm crosses
and then process into church
singing, "All Glory, Laud and
Honor."
The Rev. John L Baglien,
interim pastor, will preach on the
theme, "Who Crucified Jesus?"
On Good Friday, March 28, the
traditional Tenebrae Service,
entitled
"The
Darkness
Deepens", will be held with
congregational participation.
The Easter Festival Service with
Holy Communion will be held at
11 a.m. on Sunday, March 30.
with reception of members by
Holy Baptism and Affirmation of
Faith.
Pastor John L Baglien will
preach on the theme, "Put That
Light Back!". Special music will
be provided by Debbie Basile,
pianist.
Valby Lutheran
Valby Lutheran Church of lone
will hold the following Holy
Week Easter Services:
On Palm Sunday, March 23, at
9 a.m. the congregation will
gather in the fellowship hall to
receive palm crosses and to
process into church singing, "All
Glory, Laud and Honor."
The Rev. John L Baglien,
interim pastor, will preach on the
theme, "Who Crucified Jesus?"
On Maundy Thursday, March
27, a special evening meal will
be held in the fellowship hall at 6
p.m. The meal will conclude with
a service around the tables led by
lay readers and a candlelight
communion service conducted by
Pastor Baglien.
The Easter Festival Service will
be held at 8 a.m. at the histone
Valby Church located in the
wheat fields of Morrow County.
Special music will be provided
by Rikka Tews, organist, and
Sarah Carlson, flutist and soloist.
Holy Communion will be
administered by Pastor Baglien
who will preach on the topic,
"Put That Light Back!"
An Easter breakfast will follow
the service. This annual event is
in charge of the AAL members.
Ecumenical Easter presentation planned
the centurion, Mary and Paul.
Music will be shared in solos,
by a choir and in congregational
hymns.
The presentation is sponsored
by the South Morrow County
Ministerial
Association,
a
consortium of 12 Catholic and
Protestant churches.
"I Serve a Risen Savior", an
Easter presentation in readings
and music, will be presented on
Wednesday, March 26, at 7:30
p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church in Heppner.
The program presents the Easter
story through the voices of Peter,
the woman healed, Jesus, Judas,
Wheat League cake samples offered
The Morrow County Wheat
League will hand out samples of
this year's Oregon Wheat
Growers League contest cake on
Saturday, March 22, from noon
to 6 p.m. at Central Red Apple
Market.
The event was planned to
celebrate National Ag Day. The
1997 contest cake is a potato
cake. The recipe for the Oregon
Wheat Growers League Oregon
Potato Cake is as follows.
1 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 cup cold mashed potatoes
1 teaspoon vanilla
2-1/4 cups cake flour
1/4 cup baking cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup finely chopped Oregon
walnuts
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Cream butter and sugar until
fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time.
Blend in potatoes and vanilla.
Combine flour, cocoa, salt and
baking soda; add alternately with
milk, blending well after each
addition. Stir in nuts. Pour into
greased and floured 10-inch
bundt pan. Bake at 350 degrees
for 55 minutes. Cool in pan
upright on cooling rack. Remove
to serving plate. Dust cooled
cake with powdered sugar, sifted
over top.
(The OWGL staff agreed that
the cake improves with age and
is better the second or third day.)
O'Ducky winners announced
Roger Noble's duck out-
swam all the others and won
him $100 at the annual St.
Patrick's O"Ducky Race held
on W illow Creek in Heppner
Saturday.
Donald M atthews' duck was
second for a $75 prize; Brandi
Kroske,
third,
for
$50;
Catherine M cElligott, fourth
for $25; and Chris Whalen,
Kylie Doherty and M akenzie
Correa, fifth-seventh for $10
each.

Three Heppner students, Matt
Jepsen, Daniel Jepsen and Darren
Van Cleave were among over
200 students who competed at
•the Northeast Oregon District 6
Solo and Ensemble Contest. The
competition was held in Pen­
dleton on Saturday, March 1, at
Blue Mountain Community
College.
Matt Jepsen received a I rating
on his trumpet solo performance
of "Sonata in G Minor" by Georg
Philipp Telemann. In addition,
Matt had the honor of being
chosen to advance to the State
Solo Competition to be held at
the University of Oregon in
Eugene on April 26.
Matt, a freshman at Heppner
High School, is the son of Bill
and Nancy Jepsen. He was
accompanied on the piano by
Deborah Wryn of lone.

Jepsen, both sixth graders, com­
peted for their first time in the
instrumental
competition.
Darren received a I rating for his
trumpet solo, "Air For Comet"
by Major Herman Vincent.
Darren is the son of Tim and
Myma Van Cleave.
Daniel Jepsen performed
"Pavanne", a clarinet solo by
French composer Gabnel-Urbain
Faure, and received a II rating.
All of Daniel's competitors in the
clarinet solo division were high
school students.
Daniel is the son of Bill and
Nancy Jepsen.
Darren and Daniel were both
accompanied by Myma Van
Cleave at the piano.
Competitors were rated with
one-plus as the highest possible
score and five, the lowest.
All three boys are music
students of Heppner band
teacher, Ralph Werner.
Arts and Crafts
club to meet
The Morrow County Creative
Arts and Crafts Club is changing
their monthly meeting date from
the fourth W ednesday o f the
month to the fourth Thursday.
This month’s meeting will be
Thursday, March 27, at 1:30 p.m.
at the Willow Lanes Bowling Al­
ley in Heppner. Members may join
the group at 1 p.m. for lunch.
New members and guests are
welcome to attend.
