that experience that changed
his life and set his course for

gradually began to think about
the priesthood," said Father
Condon And he returned to
school full-time He graduated
from Mungret College at
Limerick and then went to Mt
Melleray Seminary, near the
city o f Cappaquin, where he
studied philosophy. He then
went for theological studies at
(where else9) St Patrick's
Seminary in County Tipperary,
where he was ordained
Seeking a parish, Father
Condon then wrote to a
number o f bishops in areas that
had a need for priests The first
to respond was the bishop o f
the diocese o f Baker, which
covers all o f Eastern Oregon
and Father Condon accepted a
position as assistant priest at
Lakeview
Father Condon says that the
difference between city and
rural life was greater than the
difference between the people
in Ireland and those in Oregon
"Fortunately," he says, "I very
quickly took a liking to the
wide open spaces I was
fortunate that there were quite
a few Irish there " Some o f the
Irish had come out as sheep
herders and quite a few were
first generation Irish, he said
Eastern Oregon and Ireland are
roughly the same size Ireland
is around 350 miles long and
150 miles wide
From Lakeview, Father
Condon
was
assigned
temporarily in Heppner, and
also took brief assignments in
Nyssa and Redmond That year
he was assigned to the parish
in Condon for a year From
there he accepted several long
term assignments—to Wasco
for nine years, Merrill, which is
near the California boarder, for
four years, Ontario, nine years,
Lakeview, six years, and then
Prineville, four years
It was then that his sister,
Sylvia took ill, and Father
Condon took a year's leave o f
absence, until she died When
he returned to Oregon, he
accepted a position at St
Patrick's Church in Heppner
and St William’s in lone After
four years. Father Condon

helped out a little bit in

clergy friends needed help
And at the end o f the

Father Condon says that he
gets great satisfaction in being
able to help people, to help
them come to understand the
church and become members
o f the church "I like working
with youth," he says, "I enjoy
that I've been fortunate that
people are very gracious to
me it
One o f the accomplishments
o f which he is especially proud
was to become involved in a
program called the "Parish
Renewal" program, a weekend
retreat which he finds very
helpful for people He also
continues to work in a
comparable
program
for
engaged couples, which, he
says, "is the best preparation
that the Catholic Church gives
to people getting married"
Last year he had a series o f
articles, "A Way o f Grace",
that he had written published in
the
"Catholic
Sentinel"
publication
A series o f
pictures, relating to the Seven
Sacraments and corresponding
to his work, was dedicated at
St. Patrick's Church during the
25th anniversary o f the church
In his off time, Father
Condon enjoys golf Now a
40-year veteran o f the game,
he says that he has golfed in
Ireland, but really only after he
had come to the U S. He also
likes to walk, swim, read and
practice hypnosis.
