Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner. Oregon Wednesday Febuary 26 1997 - FIVE
sherman Co- Huskies deny Mustang girls cbc title CBC basketball All-Stars picks announced
I"
____ bv Molly Rhea_____________
Saturday, February 22, was a
disappointing day for the Heppner
girls’ basketball team as the
Sherman County Huskies denied
them the title of Columbia Basin
Conference champions
The game was close throughout
and full of excitement
Jaci
Hughes added spark to the first
quarter Going to the floor to steal
the ball on a point-after inbounds
play, Hughes then flipped the ball
through two defenders to Annie
Hisler who canned the lay-in.
Heppner trailed 11-13 after one
Hisler started oft’ the second
quarter by picking off a pass and
racing down to score. The teams
matched basket for basket in the
second quarter, scoring 13 points
apiece The Mustangs were still
trailing by two, 25-27, at the half
Although Heppner held the
Huskies to three field goals and
two free »throws in the third, the
Mustangs were held to one field
goal and three points from the
charity stripe, for a score of 30-
35, after three quarters of play
The fourth quarter started out
promising as Jill Barber canned
two free throws, narrowing the
margin to 32-35. At that point the
Huskies heeded the call to mush
and scored nine unanswered points
to put up a 12 point lead
Heppner's team tenacity was
obvious as they trimmed Sherman
County's lead back to four. 41 -45,
with
less than two minutes
remaining With the clock running
down Heppner was forced to
repeatedly foul to gain possession.
This tactic didn't pan out as
Sherman County 's Maria Macnab
hit five of six free throws to put
the game out of reach with a final
score of 43-50.
Heppner's inside defense held
league leading scorer, Tvan
Sanderson, to eight points from
the field, but the Mustangs were
unable to shut down Sherman
County's solid outside shooting
Both teams earned 12 points from
behind the freethrow
line.
Heppner converted 12 of 17, while
Sherman County ended up with 12
of 19.
Lon Moeller led the Mustangs in
scoring with 10 points, eight
rebounds, two steals and a blocked
shot Hisler ended up with eight
points, two assists and two steals
Lexi Matteson had six points, half
of which came from behind the
All-Star team (l-r): Jim Schlaich (second team), Eric Schonbachler and Jaci Hughes (honorable mention),
Lori Moeller and Annie Hisler (first team), Jill Barber and Justin Matteson (honorable mention)
