    IMS Lady Cards end with a win

The lone Middle School Lady
Cardinals finished a marvelous sea­
son, winning their fifth of 11 games
on Friday, Feb. 7, against the Ar­
lington Honkers, 16-13. The Car­
dinals played a good game and out-
powered the Honkers with their
strength and height.
The Cards’ top scorers were
eighth graders Rose Parm and
Allison Halvorsen with four apiece.
Charissa Gates, Amellia Peck, Sail!
McElligott and Jeanette Brantley
followed with two each.
The Lady Cards have eight eighth
graders leaving them this season.

Heppner Mustangs fail to repeat win
The Heppner Mustangs tned to
duplicate their early season upset
of the talented Umatilla Vikings
but weren't up to the task as they
finished up on the short end of a
76-56 score at home Saturday
night, Feb. 8
The tempo was to the Vikings'
favor as they used a run and gun
and very aggressive press to race
to a 39-22 half-time lead The
Mustangs could get no closer
than 15 points the rest of the
way.
"We didn't play defense and
didn't execute on offense You
can't do that and expect to be in
the game against a good team
like Umatilla," said coach Bob
Ployhar
Brian Koffler lead the Mustangs
in scoring with 13 points,
including three-four from bey ond
the three point line Jim Schlaich
had 11 points and nine rebounds
to help pace Heppner
The Vikings had four players in
double figures
Senior Lee
Lafferty led Umatilla with 25
points
Tyson Jones added 11
points and Jim Kurtz and Troy
Johnson each had 10 points for
the league leading Vikings
Heppner enters the last weekend
of the league season with a 7-4
record They travel to Stanfield
Saturday night, Feb 15, to play
the Stanfield Tigers to end the
regular season.
The Mustangs have clinched
third place and will most likely
play
the
loser
of
the
Umatilla-Weston McEwen battle
in the district tournament in
Pendleton the next weekend
The lone Cardinal boys
completed
their Cinderella
season with a 79-66 victory over
the Wheeler Falcons Saturday,
Feb. 8. The Cardinals, with a 10-
0 record, advance to the Big Sky
District Tournament Friday, Feb.
14, in Hermiston. They will play
the Culver Bulldogs.
The Cardinals held a 12-pomt
lead ending the first quarter and
increased it to 41-26 at the half.

into the fourth quarter
The Mustangs were on fire in
the third quarter and for the
entire game, shooting 28-52 from
the field for 54 percent, one of
the highest of the season.
Senior Erie Schonbachler had
23 points for the Mustangs,
including 8-10 from the foul line
Jeff Watkins added 11 points and
Jim Schlaich had nine points and
12 rebounds against the taller
Wahtonka squad
Sam Evans and Dave Smith
had 11 and 10 points for the
Eagles
Coach Bob Ploy har called the
game, "Our best team offort of
the year Everybody contributed."
The win brought the Mustangs'
league record to 7-3 and put
them solidly in third place in the
CBC

by the Echo Cougars to win
57-49 at Echo Friday night. Feb

The Heppner Mustangs traveled
to The Dalles Friday night and
came away with a surprisingly
easy 66-43 win against the
Wahtonka Eagles
After taking a 34-25 half-time
lead, the Mustangs exploded in
the third quarter, outscoring the

rebounds. Swanson was four for
four from the free throw line.
Jake McElligott also had a
good game for the Cardinals w ith
20 points and 17 boards. Steve
Allen and Jon Garrett had 11 and
10 points respectively.
Although the Cardinals'
shooting percentage was low,
they rebounded well and made
80 percent of their free throw
attempts.
Coach LaRue was pleases with
his win, he said his players
"didn't put much emphasis on the
game because they knew they
were assured a spot at the district
tournament."

What looked like a pretty fair
lead for the Cards, dwindled in a
hurry in the third quarter of play
The ladies were slow getting
back into their game and the
Cougars slipped back to within
five However, in the last eight
minutes of the game, the One
bench was set on fire and the
intensity showed in the girls'
faces
Brenda Burright led the
Cardinals with 22 points and 10
rebounds Camie Burright put in
13 points and brought down six
rebounds Dawn Boor led the
defensive effort for One with
six steals
Jessie Fisher led
Echo's attack and had a game
high 26 points, but it wasn't
enough for the Cougars who fell
to third place with the loss to
One, 57-49

The lone Cardinals demonstrated
that they are the best in their
league w ith a 69-48 win against
the Echo Cougars. The Cardinals
led by a measly one point at the
half but increased it to seven at
the third quarter.
The Cardinals w'ere led by
junior Jake McElligott who
scored 26 points, 18 of which
were in the third quarter. Luke
Swanson scored 11 points and
ripped down six rebounds. Jon
Garret also pitched in with nine
points, all of which were three-
pointers.
Other scorers included Steve
Allen and Joe Bacon with six
apiece. Marc Orem w ith five and
seniors, Jory Crowell, Kelly
Morgan and Jacob Taylor, with
two each.
Head Coach Del LaRue said
that "the first half wasn't very
good." but added that his team
"picked up offensively and
defensively in the second half.”
