At that point the Eagles were able to twice deny the inbound pass and scored each time to tie up the score 6-6 after one By apply ing full court pressure, and Janclle Healy hitting two of her three three-point goals, the Mustangs took a 24-18 lead into the half Throughout the second half the Mustangs kept up a steady effort to increase the margin to 10 points after three periods, 30-20, and won 38-27. Annie Hisler was Heppner's top scorer with 10 points, five steals and two rebounds Healy hit three o f four three-point shots for nine points and had three rebounds Lori Moeller scored all six of her points in the first half, pulled down eight rebounds, had two steals and one assist Jill Barber scored four points, captured five rebounds and three steals as she dished out two assists Lexi Matteson had four points and three boards Jaci Hughes hit two free throws, chased down two rebounds and had a steal while dishing out three assists Brooke Boyer had two points, a rebound and a steal, while Mindy Binschus hit a freethrow, pulled down three rebounds and grabbed a steal. Even with only three Vikings managing to score in the entire game, they were able to stay even with the Mustangs for the first half Both the first and second quarters ended in a deadlock with the score tied at 10 after the first stan/a and at 18 at the half. The Mustangs came out with a swarming press for the third quarter and overwhelmed the undermanned Vikings, outscoring them 12 to four, and leading 30- 22 after three Heppner kept up the pressure for most o f the fourth period and again limited Umatilla to four points, while the Mustangs managed nine While the Mustangs were able to shut down one of the league's leading scorers in Alecia Johnson, they were unable to contain Cherra Charlo, as she exploded for 18 points Only two other Umatilla girls made four points each, to complete the Viking scoring Annie Hisler led the Mustangs in scoring with 16 points, including one three-point goal Hisler also hustled in four rebounds and dished out an assist Jill Barber added 10 points while scooping three rebounds, five steals and passing out two assists Play ing in her last home game, three-year starter Lon Moeller had six points, five rebounds and six steals. Lexi Matteson made four points, pulled down three rebounds and captured two steals Janclle Healy added a three-point goal to round out the scoring This Heppner team displayed their quickness by grabbing a total of 19 steals The Mustangs hit five of seven freethrows while the Vikings only managed to convert two out of six. The first half w as close w ith the Mustangs leading by a digit, 10-9, after one and the score tied at 16 after two. Again Ashley Ropp came out and led the charge. In the third quarter Ropp got things started off with a trey , then on Heppner’s next trip down the floor she hit a two-point goal Heppner's next possession saw Ropp ladling out an assist and the Mustangs never looked back Heppner led 30-22 after three quarters and won 42-33. Ropp led all scorers with 13 points, while rounding up one rebound and dishing out an assist. Pomt guard Kathleen Greenup was back after being sidelined for most o f the week with an ankle injury Greenup hit for eight points, three rebounds, four steals and four assists. Tnsha Adams made eight points and four rebounds Kim Pointer had six points, three boards, three steals and two assists Amy Papineau added five points along with a rebound and a steal Macy Rhea rounded out the Mustang scoring with two points, four rebounds and two steals Under Coach Dana Reid the JVs have demonstrated steady improvement Their win-loss record stands at nine wins and seven losses with only Stanfield left to play Coach Reid and her team plan to finish the season with a 10-7 record lone Lady Cardinals win critical match By Kara Miller Saturday, Feb 8, the Lady Cardinals traveled to Wheeler to play the Falcons One cruised to a 54-29 victory The Lady Cardinals were first and last to score in the game and in between were in cofttrol The Ladies were led by Brenda Bumght's game high 14 points and Suzy Heideman’s 13 Kelly Potter helped the Falcons with her team-high 12 points. Defensive efforts by B Bumght with eight steals and LaRee Anderson with five, along with Suzy Heideman pulling down seven rebounds, spurred the Cardinals' attack The Cardinals knew they bad to win or be put into a play-off game with Echo The Ladies showed how much they wanted the win as they hustled to the 29 victory. JV girls start off sweep with win bv Mollv Rhea_____________ The Mustangs knocked off all four Wahtonka teams in the Friday, February 7, matchups. The JV girls started off the sweep, winning 37-32. The girls looked a little tentative in the first quarter A combination of poor passing, minimal rebounding and multiple turnovers had the Mustangs trailing 7-14 after one. Ashley Ropp led the way in the second quarter by immediately hitting a three pointer. With Heppner's next possession Julie Watkins hit a nice ten-foot jumper and Heppner came storming back. The Mustangs trotted into the locker room leading 21 -20. In the third quarter the Mustangs worked hard on offense while playing tough defense and increased their lead to six, 30-24 Throughout the final period Heppner kept up the pace and came out winning 37-32. Ropp led all scorers with 15 points, 12 o f which came off of her four threc-pomt goals. She also had three rebounds, two steals and an assist. Watkins ended up with seven points, a rebound and a steal Kim Pointer added five points, seven rebounds, three steals and blocked a shot Amy Papineau made three points, two rebounds, four steals, an assist and blocked a shot. Aleea Strouse had three points to match her three rebounds. Abby Kahl had two points, two steals and a rebound and Trisha Adams picked up two points and two steals. This win improves the JV girls' record to eight wins vs. seven losses. Health Dept. The Cards stayed ahead of the Honkers the entire game. lone’s top scorer was seventh grader Adam McCabe. Eighth grader Korey Mor­ gan followed him with 14. Dustin Haguewoodhad 12, Corey Bennetto came in with eight and Jeremiah McElligott finished with four. The boys played a great game and used a lot of ball movement and quick­ ness.
