The Heppner Mustangs flooded
the Pilot Rock Rockets on Friday,
January 31, as all four Heppner
teams came away with a win
Once again, girls' varsity coach
John Boyer's team „won by
utilizing their teamwork and
balance
Heppner led from the get-go as
the quick Mustangs forced Rocket
turnovers and captured steal after
steal to lead 11-7 after one quarter
and 21-15 after two
The second half w as more of the
same, with Heppner pressuring the
Pilot Rock ball handlers while out-
rebounding their inside players
Heppner increased their lead to 12
after three stanzas, 29-17, and
maintained the margin throughout
the fourth quarter to win 43-31.

In an exceptionally low scoring
game on Saturday, February 1, the
JV Mustang girls again came up
short against the Sherman County
JVs, losing 26-18.
With both teams applying full
court pressure. Heppner lead 6-4
at the quarter, and 12-5 at the half.
The young Mustangs were
overtaken in the third as the
Huskies tied it up at 15.
In the final period Heppner got
into foul trouble and sent Sherman
County to the line repeatedly
Although the Huskies were only
seven of 21 from behind the
charity stripe, that was enough to
break the Mustangs back as
Heppner was only able to score
three points to the Huskies 11 in
the fourth

over the hapless Sherman County

The Heppner Mustangs traveled
to Pilot Rock Friday night and
came away with a cntical win,
64-51, over the Rockets. Pilot
Rock was only one loss behind the
Mustangs and this victory on the
road did a great deal for the
Mustangs' post season hopes
Heppner started out with a bang,
jumping out to a 22-4 lead after
one quarter

quarter and kept him to only four
points in the first half
After cruising to a 50-34 lead
after three quarters, the Mustangs
struggled in the last stanza The
Rockets closed to within five
points at 58-53 before the
Mustangs put the game away,
despite some terrible free-throw
shooting. Heppner was 19-43
from the chanty stnpe in the game
and only 12-28 in the last quarter
Jim Schlaich had his usual
productive game with 20 points
and 10 rebounds. Schlaich is
leading the CBC in rebounds and
is in the top 10 for sconng
Justin Matteson and Eric
Schonbachler both scored in
double figures, with 15 and 12
points
respectively.
