Missed shot gives lone the win Cardinals snap Grizzlies'

Kelly Browning, the Echo Cou­
gars’ senior point guard, tossed up
a last second shot from beyond the
three-point arch. In answer to
lone’s prayers, the ball hit the back
of the nm and bounced down to
the Cardinals’ guards waiting be­
low, as the final buzzer sounded.
The Lady Cardinals captured the
win, 45-42, on Friday, Jan. 24. If
Browning’s three-pointer had con­
nected, the game would have gone
into overtime.
In the first half, scoring was
very close, with both teams play­
ing tight defense. For lone’s of­
fense, Suzy Heideman’s game-high
13 points led the Lady Cards, while
her matching opponent, Jessie
Fisher of Echo, was one basket
behind her with her team-high 11
points for the Cougars.
Defensive pressure was the key
to lone’s game, all the guards had
many good plays. Dawn Boor,
Brenda Bumght, Stephanie Hague-
wood, Camie Burright and Nikki
McEUigott each added steals for the
Cardinals. Haguewood was strong
at the line, putting in seven for eight
for lone. C. Bumght led lone on
the boards with five. lone’s defense
kept Echo’s Browning to seven
points, and Casey Seeger to only
eight, as the Cards put away the
45-42 win and secured second
place in the Big Sky East with a 4-
1 record for the season.

The lone Cardinals jumped out
to an early lead against Wheeler,
Saturday, Jan. 18, and they never
looked back, lone beat the Falcons,
96-45.
Luke Swanson had an outstand­
ing game, scoring 20 points in the
first quarter. Swanson finished the
game with 27 points, five rebounds
and seven assists. He shot 58 per­
cent from the field, and was 100
percent on the free throw line.
Jon Garrett and Jake McEUigott
followed Swanson in scoring with
14 points each. They both shot 86

The Lady Cards JV squad was
idle over the weekend, but will see
action again this coming weekend
at home against the Condon Lady
Blue Devils.
The lone Cardinal junior varsity
team crushed the Wheeler Falcons,
66-43, for the Cardinals’ fifth win
o f the season. “ It was our best
overall game of the season. Our
defense finally clicked,” com ­
mented head coach Dean Robin­
son.
The Cardinals were leading 32-
24 at the half and held the lead the
rest of the game. Overall, the team
stole the ball 20 times and blocked
six shots.
Freshman Alan Gribskov led the
team with 14 points and two re­
bounds, follow ed by Patrick
Eberhard and Nathan Rietmann,
each with 13 points. Randy Scott,
also one of the leading scorers,
dumped in 12 points and one as­
sist. Mark McEUigott scored eight
points and had eight assists. Other
scorers includes Pete Cantu with
four and Steve Crum with two.

In preseason, it was said it was
going to be lone’s toughest game
of the season. But lone held their
heads high as they beat the Helix
Grizzlies Tuesday, Jan. 21, 72-43,
and snapped the Grizzlies’ 10-game
winning streak.
Jake McEUigott led the Cardinals
in scoring, with 20 points. He also
pulled down 11 rebounds. Jon Gar­
rett came off the bench to score
14 points for the Cards, plus had
six boards and three assists.
Luke Sw anson scored 12
points, while Steve Allen had nine.

Toni Kemp
Heppner High School senior
Toni Kemp has been notified that
she is a semi-finalist in the 1996-
97 Coca-Cola Scholars Program.
Kemp was selected for her
"outstanding
leadership,
achievements and potential", said
J Mark Davis, executive vice
president of the Coca-Cola
Scholars Foundation
O f the 1.821 semi-finalists. 151
will be selected as finalists to
attend the 1997 Scholars Weekend
to be held in Atlanta April 3-6 Of
the finalists. 51 will be awarded
national scholarships of $20,000
and 100 will receive regional
scholarships of $4.000 each
Kemp, the daughter of Gary and
Marcia Kemp of Lexington, plans
to attend Oregon State University
next fall, majoring in agriculture

The lone Middle School Lady

Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 25,
and received fourth place.
The Lady Cards just can’t seem
to stop those Lady Cougars The
first game saw

Echo, 31 -29. At the end of the first
quarter, the Cardinals trailed by
two, and stuck with it until one
minute remaining in the half. Echo’s
Audrey Yunker canned two three-
pointers and another bucket to give
the Cougars a 10 point advantage
that lone couldn’t overcome.
Amellia Peck led the Lady Cards
in scoring with nine points, fol­
lowed by Chanssa Gates with eight.

another victory with a dom inat­
ing 70-53 win against the Echo
C ougars. The C ards trailed by
eight at the quarter, but inch­
ed ahead of the C ougars at the
half by one point. The C ar­
dinals led the rest of the gam e
and finished w ith a 17-point
victory. H ead coach Del LaRue
com m ented, " It w as a big win
for us; it put us in the driv er's
se a t."

have been playing a low key
defense, but they still had the
visiting Stanfield Tigers chasing
their tails as Heppner trotted to a
69-16 win on Saturday . January
25.
The quarter scoring breakdown

The Heppncr girls suffered their
only league loss at the hands of the
Sherman County Huskies, and
their notorious officials, on
January 4 It looks as though the
Mustangs might be ready to stomp
some dogs when the Huskies mush
into town this Saturday

The lone Middle School boys’
basketball team competed in the
Helix Tournament, Saturday, Jan
25, and received third place.
For the opening game, they
played the Echo Cougars and lost
42-23. Korey Morgan led the Car­
dinals in sconng with eight points.
Jeremy Rietmann had seven; Adam
McCabe, four; and Brad Bumght
and Dustin Haguewood each aJ led
two.
Although their shot at the first-
place trophy was gone, the ( irdi-
nals came back and beat the Helix
Grizzlies for third place lone
outscored Helix, 65-51 Morgan
had an outstanding game, scoring
26 points. Bumght had 13 points,
w hile Rietmann added eight Helix’s
Parker led the Grizzlies with 20
points.
