H eppner Mustangs upset rival Vikings, 44-41
The Heppner Mustangs turned
giant killer as they slayed the de
fending league champs, the Uma
tilla Vikings, 44-41, in Umatilla on
Saturday, Jan. 11.
Heppner jumped to an early lead,
outscoring Umatilla 11-8 in the
opening period. Jim Schlaich had
10 of his game-high 20 points in
the quarter. Schlaich also pulled
down 15 rebounds in the game in a
great performance for “the small
est big man in the league.”
Brian KofTler hit two three-point
ers in the second quarter to spark
the Mustangs to a 25-18 half time
lead. Koffler was 3-6 from the field
and scored nine points.
Heppner used a basic man-to
man defense to stifle the normally
high-scoring Vikings and handled
the Vikings pressure well for most
of the game.
Umatilla stormed back midway
through the fourth quarter and even
led 39-38 inside one minute to play.
Sophomore Tim Dickenson,
cool under pressure, drilled 4-6 free
throws at the end of the game to
go with two baskets and scored
eight points for Heppner.
Lee Lafferty and Fran Sanguino
led the Vikings with 11 and 10
points respectively.
“We only shot 25 percent from
the floor and 42 percent from the
foul line and were still able to beat
a very good team on the road. That
says a lot about our kids’ charac
ter and how hard they work on
defense. They certainly have may
respect,” said head coach Bob
Ployhar about the win.
The Mustangs are 2-1 in league
play and 9-3 overall. They host Pi
lot Rock on Fnday, Jan. 17, and
Wahtonka Saturday, Jan. 18, this
week.
