Heppner Fillies hand Cougars first loss, 49-42 |one Cardina|s whip Sherman Huskies, 62-43
The lone Cardinals traveled
to Maupin to play in the Red-
side Invitational Tournament
on Friday, Dec. 20, and came
away with a hard-fought win,
62-43, against the Sherman
Huskies, in the second game of
the afternoon.
The first quarter was back
and forth, with neither team
gaining an edge. The score was
deadlocked at 13. Second
quarter action saw the Cardi­
nals outscore the Huskies by
four and leave the floor at the
break with a 31-27 lead.
The third quarter was a re­
play of the first, with the Car­
dinals lengthening the lead to
five by outscoring the Huskies,
10-9.
In the fourth quarter, the
Cards found the range from the
three-point line and drilled four
three-pointers to put the game
out of reach for the Huskies.
Two three-pointers by Jon Gar­
rett and one each by Luke
Swanson and Joe Bacon spell­
ed the difference in the quarter.
The Cards also picked up the
defensive pressure in the last
quarter and held the Huskies to
seven points, while scoring 21.
Jacob Taylor proved to be the
catalyst as he came off the
bench and played well defen­

On Saturday, December 21,

Echo Cougars their first loss of
the season, winning 49-42.
This improves the Fillies’ win-
loss record to 7-2.
The teams came out playin;
fairly
evenly,
bot
demonstrating quickness and
strong defense. Using a zone
defense, the Cougars led 11-12
after one quarter. Though the
second quarter was much of
the same, the Fillies forced the
Cougars to open up their zone
after Annie Hisler and Jill
Barber each canned a trey.
The Fillies trailed 25-29 at the
half.
Heppner once again pulled
out their intimidating full court
press in the third quarter. This
ressure defense enabled the
illies to score 16 points to the
Cougar's two. It also landed
two Cougars in foul trouble
and gained the Fillies a 10-
point lead, 41-31 after three
full quarters.
The fourth quarter Echo put
up a run and, although they
were able to outscore the
Fillies 11 to eight,
the
Cougars were unable to
overcome the third quarter
margin and the Fillies rolled to
the victory, 49-42.
The Fillies gained points
from eight players and snot 61
percent (11/18) from the
charity line. The Cougars
received scoring from only
four players and the Fillies
* sent them to the line only eight
times where they managed to
1 convert four.

Annie Hisler was the leading
scorer for the Fillies with 12
points, including three for
four from the freethrow line
and a three pointer. Hisler
also scrambled for three steals
and two assists.

Lori Moeller scored eight
points and pulled down ten
rebounds. Jill Barber and Jaci
Hughes both added seven
points, and each also scored a
trey. Mindy Binchus, Brooke
Boyer antf Lexi Matteson
scored four apiece and Casey
Ingraham added two to round
out the Filly scoring.
Echo's Jessi Fisher led all
scorers with
13.
Kelly
Browning had 12, Casey
Seeger 11 and Crystal Bevan
added six for the Cougars.
The Fillies have a two-week
break over Christmas and New
Year’s then start league play at
home, against the always
tough Weston-McEwen Tiger-
Scots on Friday, January 3.
Saturday, January 4, the
Heppner teams make the long
f road trip to Moro to take on
the Sherman County Huskies.

Fillies volleyball team, was
recently tapped for Honorable
Mention on the Class 2A All-
State High School Volleyball
Team.
Other CBC athletes achieving
this honor include Amber
Weatherspoon, a junior at
Weston-McEwen, who was
listed as second team, and
Annie Hisler
Sherman County senior, Tyan
Annie Hisler, a junior at Sanderson, honorable mention.
Heppner High School and the
lone JVs hook second victory

The lone junior varsity boys'
basketball team hooked its se­
cond victory on Tuesday, Dec.
17, when the Cardinals defeat­
ed the Stanfield Tigers, 63-46,
in a dominating ball game.
The leading scorer for the
Cardinals was junior Nathan
Rietmann, with 18 points and
four rebounds. Rietmann also
made an outstanding half court
shot in the final seconds of the
third quarter.
Other top scorers included
Patrick Eberhard with 16 and
Pete Cantu with eight.
The Cardinals hope to defeat
Umatilla in their upcoming
game on Friday, Dec. 27, in
Umatilla.

Michael and Kari Keown of
Heppner, is a member of the
George Fox University Lady
Bruin Basketball Team.
Keelie, a junior at George
Fox. has made four field goals
and one three pointer, one
offensive rebound.

Fillies canter to win over Imbler Panthers

The Heppner Fillies cantered
to another win as they bested
the Imbler Panthers 53-40,
Friday, December 20. The
Fillies had three players in
double figures with Lori
Moeller again leading the pack
with 15 points and 10
rebounds, Annie Hisler with
12 and Mindy Binschus with
10 points.
The game started with Imbler
controlling the tip and
immediately going into a
slowed down offense. The
Fillies
displayed
patient
defense
and after eight
minutes the score was 11-12,
Imbler up by one.
The second quarter the Fillies
picked up the pace, forcing the
Panthers into more o f a
running game. The Fillies
>ained the advantage and were
eading 22-21 as they trotted
into the locker room at
halftime.
In the third quarter the Fillies
came out with a full court
press that had the Panthers
chasing their own tails. With
the strong defensive effort and
a solid offense the Fillies
outscored Imbler 14-8 to
increase the lead to 36-29
going into the final period.
The Fillies kept up the pace
and pressure throughout the
fourth. Everything seemed to
click into place as the girls
demonstrated their teamwork,
passing off for the best shots
and finishing strong, 53-40,
over the Panthers.
To round out the Filly
scoring, Casey Ingraham
contributed eight, Brooke
Boyer had four, and Lexi
Matteson and Jaci Hughes
both added two points. As a
team, the Fillies shot 67
percent from the free throw

In the four game sweep over
Imbler, the JV Fillies had the
most exciting finish, winning
34-33 in overtime. The game
started out slow, the Fillies
leading 8-5 at the quarter and
12-11 at the half. The second
half the Heppner team sparked
somewhat and led 20-17 going
into the final quarter. Imbler’s
JV ’s were able to tie it up in
the fourth to take the game
into overtime, with 28 apiece.
In the four extra minutes the
Fillies managed to score an
additional six points while
Imbler, down to five players
due to foul trouble, scored
only five. The win evens this
young squad’s record to 3-3
for the preseason.
Leading the scoring for the
JV Fillies was Ashley Ropp
with 12, followed by Kathleen
Greenup with nine, Casey
Ingraham and Trisha Adams
with four each, Julie Watkins
and Stephanie Clough with
two apiece, and Aleea Strouse
added one.
