Twice, in only four days, the
Heppner Mustangs outplayed
the visiting Boardman River
side Pirates, 52-48, on Tuesday,
Dec. 17.
As in the previous game with
the Pirates, Heppner roared to
a good lead at the half, 35-21.
The Mustangs used a sticky
man-to-mab half court defense
and a zone press to befuddle
the visitors. The only thing that
gave the Pirates hope was a late
run in the fourth quarter.
"T h e kids played 3Vi excel
lent quarters of basketball,"
said coach Bob Ployhar. "They
got a little excited and put up
some ill-advised shots in the
fourth quarter. That let River
side back into the game. It was
a good learning experience."
Senior Jim Schlaich had a
strong game for Heppner. He
tallied 11 points to go with his
14 rebounds to lead the Mus
tangs. Justin Matteson, who is
quickly establishing himself as
the Mustang floor general, lead
Heppner in scoring, with 16
points.
The Pirates were led by Kevin
Baker, a slick looking 6 '3 "
sophomore, with 10 counters.
The win brought the Mus
tang record to 5-2 before week
end games against Imbler and
Echo.

become the winner of the tour
nament. In the beginning, it
looked like lone would win the
championship trophy. They
made six points and held Con
don scoreless in the first three
minutes. But then the Devils
made the tables turn and the
exhausted Cardinals couldn't
stop them.
Stephanie Shaffer and Schott
were the only players to make
points for the Blue Devils, but
they did their job. The two girls
helped their team pass up the
Lady Cards for a 41-37 win.
Heideman led lone with 11
rebounds, while Brenda Bur-
right added six boards and five
steals. A spokesperson for the
team said, "This game truly
was a test of each team's
guards; their hu stle and
"w ant” determined who won.
It will be interesting to watch
these two teams when pre
season is over."

On the second day of com
petition at the Wasco County
Tournament in Maupin, the
lone Lady Cardinals were
defeated by the Condon Blue
Devils in the championship
round, 41-37.
Condon jumped to an early
start with Kacee Kennedy put
ting in three points. Suzy
Heideman stole the ball and
put it in for two for the Cards.
That seemed to be the turning
point for the lone guards. They
began stealing the ball and run
ning it back to set up the
offense.
lone's Heideman had a big
job on her hands, stopping
Margaret Schott, the 6' forward
for Condon, who made four of
her 10 points during the first
quarter. However, Heideman
made four of her game-high 14
points, also in the first quarter.
Camie Burright came off the
Cardinal bench to help the lone
girls gain the lead in the second
quarter, but it was temporary,
as the Blue Devils came back
within one at the end of the
third.
Time stood still in the fourth
quarter, as each team battled to
10 players whenever it is need
e d ," said LaRue.
The Cardinals will travel to
Umatilla on Friday, Dec. 27, to
take on the Umatilla Vikings,
who are highly rated in the
CBC this year.

ship game of the Redside Tour
nament on Saturday, Dec. 21 at
