The H eppner M ustangs
traveled to Boardman Satur
day, Dec. 14, and pasted the 3A
Riverside Pirates, 46-36.
Heppner used a strangling
defense to limit the Pirates to
only 10 points in the first half,
as they rolled to a 23-10 half
time lead.
Mustangs' coach Bob Ployhar
applauded the M ustangs'
" g r e a t defensive e f f o r t."
"Justin Matteson did a good
job on Kyle Killingbeck," he
said. Killingbeck, a 6 '7 " senior,
was shut out in the first half
and scored 13 for the game.
The Pirates came back and
made the game interesting, cut
ting the Mustangs' lead to six
at 39-33. Heppner used a delay
starting at the four-minute
mark to close out Riverside,
despite some poor free throw
shooting-Heppner shot only 10
for 19 for the contest.
Eric Shonbachler led the
Mustangs with 10 points, while
Jim Schlaich and Matteson each
added nine counters. Schlaich
also pulled down seven re
bounds. Jeff Watkins had a
strong game with six points
and six rebounds for Heppner.

lone Cardinals defeat Rockets
By Kara Miller
The lone Lady Cardinals
showed their fatigue from the
previous evening's game when
the Pilot Rock Rockets came to
town on Saturday, Dec. 14. The
night before, the girls had
played a long, hard-fought
game against Heppner and
were still feeling the loss.
The girls took to the court,
but did not seem ready to play
a back-to-back game. Suzy
Heideman got the tip-off, but
the Cards got it down the court
only to tie it up and give it to
the Rockets. Offense was slow
at starting, but the lone girls
put the first points on the board
with a rebound and shot by
Brenda Burright. Pilot Rock ran
down the court and answered
with two, then took the lead
when a player drove the paint,
was fouled and made her free
throws.
Fatigue and frustration took
its toll as there were many turn
overs in the game and not
many points scored. The score
was Pilot Rock 20-19 at the half.
In the third, lone again put
the first shot up and put the
first points on the board, but
Pilot Rock came right back with
two of their own. lone got into
foul trouble and Pilot Rock
capitalized by sinking most of
their free throws. The Rockets
seemed unstoppable from
three-point land as they easily
took the lead and kept it. They
widened their margin and at
the end of the third, the score
w as 38-34.
The Cards' Heideman scored
20 points, but it wasn't enough
to pull out the win. The final
was 49-47, Pilot Rock. LaRee
Anderson led the Cards with
four steals, while Heideman
and B. Burright each had seven
rebounds.
Mustangs put hex on Condon Blue Devils
The Heppner Mustangs put
a hex on the Condon Blue
Devils Tuesday night, Dec. 10,
and came away with a 51-40
. victory. The win moved the
Mustangs' preseason record to
3-1.
Heppner used an active press
and a tight man-to-man de
fense to run to a 22-9 first
quarter lead. The Blue Devils
came back in the second stan
za and made the score 37-28 at
the break.
The second half was a lack
luster two periods for both
teams as Heppner outscored
Condon 14-12 for the final
victory.
Eric Schonbachler led a list of
10 Mustangs who put points up
on the board with 13 counters,
including three baskets from
beyond the arc.
Senior Jim Schlaich led the
Mustangs with eight boards
and five steals, while Jerid
Ployhar added five rebounds.
Heppner was plagued by 15
turnovers in the low-scoring
contest.
While happy with the win,
coach Bob Ployhar said, "O ur
defense saved our bacon. We
really need some practice time
on offense. That was our fourth
game in eight days and the lack
of practice really show ed."
HJH teams busy
over the weekend
By Lonnie Rill
Heppner fans were busy this
week going to over fifteen
games in a two-day span. The
weekend started off with the
freshmen playing the Spray JV.
Spray had an age and height
advantage, but the C-team
played hard. They still lost
though, in a great effort.
On Friday, Dec. 13, the
Heppner Junior High (HJH)
seventh grade boys came back
from a 13 point deficit at half
time to win the game against
Umatilla in the last quarter.
This took the HJH boys by sur
prise and so the Athena-Wes
ton team jumped out and beat
them the next day. They played
well, but the other team had a
height advantage.
The key to the seventh
grades' offense this year will be
their speed and aggressiveness.
The HJH seventh grade girls,
on the other hand, had a great
weekend and won both of their
games against Umatilla and
Athena-Weston. The girls are
rough competitors, play well
together and have a good
R season started.
W The HHS JV boys had a
tough weekend, losing to
Riverside, which put them at a
record of 3-1.
