lone Cardinals stymie Mustangs, 73-49
-
The Heppner Mustangs trav
eled to lone Friday, Dec. 13,
and came out on the short end
of a 73-49 game. After beating
the Cardinals 86-56 just two
weeks ago, the M ustangs
thought this game would be
easy.
The game was close at half
time, as the Mustangs led
30-26. Heppner picked apart
the Cardinal zone for some
easy baskets, but the Cards
bombed away from three-point -
land to keep it close.
In the second half, the
M ustangs' cold shooting
caught up with them. They
scored only 19 points in the se
cond half, shooting only 16 for
62 from the floor for the game
and 13 for 28 from the charity
stripe.
Meanwhile, lone was light
ing up the scoreboard. The
Cards were led by Jake McElli-
gott and'M ark Orem with 17
points each. Point guard Steve
Allen had 14 points and Luke
Swanson, back from surgery,
had 10. Jon Garrett hit three
treys in his first action of the
season.
Senior Justin Matteson hit for
14 points to lead the Mustangs
and Jim Schlaich had 10 points.
The loss dropped the Must
ang season record to 3-2.

they had beaten a week earlier.
But, as the game started, it
looked like there was a storm
brewing inside the Lady Cards.
lone got the tip-off to take it
down the court. Heppner stole
it away, but their basket at
tempt was unsuccessful. Suzy
Heideman rebounded and
assisted with a full-court pass
to Stephanie Haguewood for
two points.
Heppner did not respond un
til after LaRee Anderson had
added two more for the Cards.
Then the Fillies' Mindy Bins-
chus, Lexi Matteson and Jill
Barber each put two on the
board in succesion.
Both teams were having pro
blems with turnovers and fouls
throughout the whole game.

determination and made the
necessary plays (in the
overtime) to win.”
The game started out slow
with both teams jockeying for

quickness with a good
transition game and led 16-6

In the second quarter Condon

Heppner s 13 to widen the gap

The Fillies made an honest
