In the Service
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class
David S. Dooney, son of
Jaunita Bohnhof of Irrigon,
recently returned from a six
month deployment to the
western Pacific and Indian
oceans aboard the guided
missile cruiser USS California.
Dooney is one of more than
550 sailors aboard the cruiser
who returned to their home-
port in Bremerton, WA. They
were part of the eight-ship USS
Carl Vinson Battle Group,
which also included nine tac­
tical aircraft squadrons, surface
combatants and submarines.
During the deploym ent,
Dooney supported the retalia­
tory missile strikes against Iraq
during Operation Desert Strike
in the Persian Gulf by provid­
ing air defense support for the
USS Tarawa A m phibious
Ready Group.
Dooney and fellow crew
members visited Australia,
Bahrain, Hawaii, Hong Kong,
Japan and Singapore.
The 1993 graduate of River­
side High School joined the
Navy in June, 1993.

During the six weeks of train­
ing, the airman studied the Air
Force mission, organization
and customs, and received
special training in human rela­
tions.
In addition, he earned credits
toward an associate degree
through the Community Col­
lege of the Air Force for com­
pleting basic training.
McDonald, the son of James
McDonald, Sr., Irrigon, is a
1996 graduate of Riverside
High School in Boardman.

First Christian Church, Heppner
The First Christian Church children's choir will present their
performance of "A Day in the Manger" Sunday, Dec. 22, at 6
p.m. The play tells the story of how a family finds the true spirit
of Christmas in their new home. The children will perform some
traditional Christmas carols as well as a few new songs that are
"sure to delight audiences of all ages," said a spokesperson.
The public is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served
in the church fellowship hall following the play. Bible school is
at 9:45 a.m. with church services at 11 a.m.
St. Patrick's Catholic Church
Christmas Eve Mass at St. Patrick's Church in Heppner will
begin at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24, with the Folk Group
singing Christmas carols.
The Candlelight Procession will begin at 9 p.m. with the bless­
ing of the manger scene and the Christmas Vigil Mass.
Christmas Mass with the singing of Christmas carols will be
at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 25.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
St. William's Catholic Church
Christmas Mass with the singing of Christmas carols will be
held on Christmas Day, Wednesday, Dec. 25, at 8:45 a.m. at St.
William's Church in lone.

Christmas Eve worship services with the singing of Christmas
carols and Eucharist will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church
in Heppner, beginning at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24.

Heppner will be held at 11 p.m., Christmas Eve, Tuesday, Dec.
24.

new library director, Gilbert
"Tony” Chavez. He is respon­
sible for library operations at
H ep p n er and Boardm an
branch libraries effective Dec.

Chavez brings with him over
22 years of professional library
experience, including head
librarian positions in the
southern California communi­
ties of Rancho Cucamonga,
Montclair and Chino Hills.
Most recently, he has been ser­
ving as network services man­
ager of four branch libraries of
the Braille Institute Library in
Los Angeles.
"The libraries at Heppner
and Boardman reflect a strong
commitment to public services
by a dedicated and quality staff
and a sense of community
pride," said Chavez. "I am
looking forward to working
with the communities during
the coming months. Together
we will continue to improve
and expand quality library ser­
vices for all our fine communi­
ties.”
The OTL board plans a wel­
come open house at the bran­
ches in January. The date and
time will be announced later.
Candlelight Christmas Eve services will be held Tuesday, Dec.
24, at Hope/Valby Lutheran Parish at 6 p.m. at Valby Lutheran
Church, lone, and at 9 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, Hepp­
ner. Pastor John Baglien, interim pastor, will be preaching on
the theme of "Crooked Halos and Bathrobed Shepherds."

Patty Helen Wehrli, Fossil, and David McNary, lone, will
be married at 1 p.m. on January 4, 1997, at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church in Heppner.
Patty is the daughter of Bill and Linda Wehrli o f Blythe,
CA. She was raised by her grandparents, Bob and Helen
Wehrli, Fossil.
David is the son of Lloyd and Shirley McNary, lone.
A reception will follow at the American Legion Hall in
lone.

Christmas church services announced
Library district
hires new
director
Marine PFC Jason V. Karf-
man, son of Diane Karfman, ir-
rigon, recently graduated from
the Marine Corps Basic Combat
Engineer Course at Marine
.Corps Base Camp in Lejeune,
NC.
During the five week course,
Karfman learned the funda­
mentals of engineering support
for combat units, including the
procedures for building and re-
paring bridges, roads and field
fortifications. Karfman also
learned about demolitions,
land mine warfare and camou­
flage techniques.
Karfman will accompany
Marine infantry forces to build
roads, set up camp and fortify
the living areas.
A 1995 graduate of Riverside
High School, he joined the
Marine Corps in February,
1996.

tion and maintenance of gas
turbine engines and support
systems.
As a gas turbine systems
technician in the Navy, Baker
will operate and repair the jet
engines used to propel a ship
through the water. Baker also
will work on main propulsion
machinery, electrical and elec­
tronic circuitry and is now
trained to perform related ad­
ministrative tasks.
The 1994 graduate of lone
High School joined the Navy in
August 1994.
The Morrow County
Creative Arts and Crafts
(MCCAC) club will have their
annual Christmas party and
gift and goody exchange on
Thursday, Dec. 19, at 2 p.m. at
the home o f Betty Mills,
Heppner.
Members and guests are
reminded to bnng their
"Christmas spirit, a $5-$10
gift, either homemade or
otherwise and any Christmas
treats that they would like to
share and trade with others,"
said a MCCAC spokesperson.
Lunch will be held before
the party at 1 p.m. in the
coffee room at Yaw’s with a
short meeting to follow at 1:30
p.m.
