weeks. To be included on the

average of 3.5-4. To be named
to the honorable mention 'B'

For the school finals, the Na­
tional Geographic Society pro­
vides the questions and an­
swers which address the sub­
ject of geography in its broadest
sense. Students who qualify for
the state finals have demon­
strated extensive knowledge of
all aspects of the study of geo­
graphy, said Shaw.

For the ninth year, the Na­
tional Geographic Society is
holding the National G eo­
graphy Bee for US students in
the fourth through eighth
grades.
For the first time, two school
finals for the Bee will be held
in Heppner. School finals will
be held separately for junior
high (HJH) and elementary
(HES) school students. The
champion of each division will
take a written test to determine
qualification for the Oregon
State Geography Bee on April
4.
The school finals will be held
Friday, Jan. 3; the HJH contest
will be at 8 a.m. at the Hepp­
ner High School, and the HES
contest will be at 10 a.m. in the
HES library. Alan Beck will be
the question reader and judge,
Linda Shaw will be score and
time keeper.
Students have taken a writ­
ten qualifying test to determine
eligibility for the school finals.
From HJH, seventh grader
Jessica Gutierrez and eighth
grader Craig Scott tied for the
top score of 51 out of 55. Other
finalists are: eighth grade Justin
Thursday, Dec. 19 meeting will
be the Christmas exchange and
potluck dinner.
The card party was held
Saturday evening, Dec. 7, at
the Rebekah Hall. Prizes were
won by Bob Taylor and Virginia
Peck, high, Clarence Buchanan
and Leila Palmer, second high,
and Clarence Buchanan and
Virginia Peck, traveling. Re­
freshments were served.

Scavenger hunter-shoppers
found "Holiday Treasures" in
participating businesses last
Sunday, Dec. 8, in Heppner,
during the Sunday shopping
hours of noon-4 p.m.
Winners found a special holi­
day decoration in each business
and were rewarded with prizes
from the businesses and one
grand prize of $100 in gift cer­
tificates. Winners were: Toni
Carter (Gardner's); Jim Fichter
(M urray's); Aleea Strouse
(Peterson's); Doug Orwick (R &
W); Barb Orwick (Yaw's); Eva
Chitty (Shoe Box); and Sarah
Baker, $100 grand prize. Baker
also won the Halloween scav­
enger hunt grand prize.
The Heppner Chamber of
Commerce will host "Lunch
with Santa” at the Elks' Club,
starting at noon, this Sunday,
Dec. 15. While youngsters visit
with Santa, eat lunch, watch a
movie and get a picture taken
with the white-haired gentle­
man, parents are encouraged to
