Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 30, 1996 - FIVE
Mustangs blast Pilot Rock Rockets, 42-0 lone Cardinals tops in Condon matchup
Both the Condon Blue Devils
and the lone Cardinals came in
to the October 10 football
matchup with identical records
and similar hopes, but it was
the Cards who walked away
with the lopsided 60 to 14 win
that night.
The Cards came into the
game ready to make a state
ment to the rest of the league:
that they wanted to be in the
playoffs, and they wasted no
time making their point, stop
ping the Devils on their first of
fensive drive and then march
ing the ball in for a touchdown
on a 73 yard run by senior run-
ningback Pete Cantu.
The Cardinals then went on
to score the first 42 points of the
game on a perfect offensive ef-
fort, while at the same time
showing great defense by hold
ing Condon to no points.
With a balanced and strong
second team playing the last six
minutes of the first half, the
Cards gave up two touch
downs to the Blue Devil first
string before the break.
The Cards decided to finish
the game and get home to rest
up for their next week's game
with Culver, as they scored two
touchdowns in the third
quarter to activate the 45-point
mercy rule and end the game
early.
The contest was a near
perfect game for the Cardinals
as they held Condon to only
125 yards of total offense.
Meanwhile the lone offense
wracked up 456 yards of total
offense including a 106 yard
two touchdown effort by senior
running back Randy Scott and
147-yard two touchdown pro
duction by Cantu. Senior
quarterback Luke Swanson also
had a good night, throwing for
118 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Freshman running back Dan
Scott had one rushing
touchdown and 52 yards and
freshman end Allan Gribskov
caught a touchdown pass from
Swanson that was a "flat layed
out catch". Junior end Jake
McElligott had 72 yards receiv
ing with one touchdown.
"This was a great team ef
fort," said Gregg Rietma in,
Cardinal head coach.

Big Culver team downs lone, 60 - 42
Shane Matheny (5) carries the ball for the Mustangs. Matheny also caught four interceptions in the
game. No. 82 is Jeff Currin.
The H eppn er Mustangs
blasted the Pilot Rock Rockets
and ruined their homecoming,
Friday, Oct. 25, with a 42-0
thrashing. The win brings the
Mustangs record to 3-2 in lea
gue and 6-2 for the season.
The game was no contest as
the Mustangs scored early and
often, completely dominating
the Rockets by scoring twice in
the first quarter and three times
in the second quarter to take a
34-0 halftime lead.
Junior running back Travis
Wilhelm scored first for the
Mustangs with a five yard
touchdown run. The kick was
wide left and Heppner led 6-0.
Quarterback Brian Koffler hit
Jeff Watkins with a four yard
pass for the next score. Sopho
more Derek Gunderson ran in
the PAT for a 14-0 Mustang
lead. Overall, Koffler was 7-12,
with no interceptions, for 164
yards and three touchdown
passes for the game.
The Mustang defense was
awesome the entire evening.
The Rockets leading runner,
Marlin Bernabe, was held to —7
yards rushing on ten carries, by
a swarming team defense. Cor-
nerback Shane Matheny inter
cepted three Rocket passes to
pace the secondary.
Running back Eric Schon-
bachler continued his fine
season offensively with a 23
yard screen pass for a touch
down from Koffler. Schon-
bachler was coming off his best
offensive display of the season
against the Stanfield Tigers
with a three-touchdown perfor
mance.
D. Gunderson scored on a 63
yard screen pass behind the
blocking of Jonas Healy, Justin
Matteson, Brent Gunderson
and Phil Tellechea. Schon-
bachler was good on the PAT
for a 28-0 lead.
Next, tackle Rick Worden
scored the first touchdown of
his high school career from five
yards out, and the Mustangs
led 34-0 going into the locker
room at the half; this despite a
Rockets announcer trying to of
ficiate from the announcer's
stand while doing the play-by-
play.
In the second half, Tellechea,
another senior lineman, blasted
over from the one yard line to
complete the scoring for Hepp
ner, with Josh Coiner adding a
running PAT for a 42-0 Mus
tang lead. The entire roster
played in the third and fourth
quarters, and gave the fans
glimpses of what next year's
Mustangs might look like.
The Rockets, who were
thought to be a tough oppo
nent, were flat all evening.
The Mustangs end their suc
cessful season at home with a
game against the Wahtonka
Eagles. Heppner is mathemati
cally eliminated from the play
offs, but the Eagles could
qualify for the playoffs if Wes-
ton-McEwen beats Umatilla Fri
day night and Wahtonka beats
the Mustangs. Game time is
7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2, at
the M orrow County Fair
grounds.

If the state's number one
ranked team, the Culver
Bulldogs, with its large 30 man
football team came to town
looking for an easy win, they
didn't get it October 18, as the
lone Cardinals put up a tough
fight before going down 60 - 42
to the bigger Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs and the Car
dinals put 102 points on the
scoreboard and wracked up
over 1,000 yards of total offense
before the night was through.
Culver was the first to draw
blood in the game, scoring on
a halfback trap play, but the
Cards came right back and
scored on a 67-yard run by
quarterback Luke Swanson.
Culver then went on to score
two more touchdowns on half
back runs before Swanson
came back again to put the ball
in the endzone. The score at
the half was 18-6 with neither
team managing any PATs.
With light problems after the
homecoming activities the
game was delayed 40 minutes.
The second half was an of
fensive show for both the
teams, but the Cards could not
quite catch up to the much
larger Bulldogs.
The Cards were led by senior
quarterback Luke Swanson
with 163 yards rushing and
three rushing touchdowns, and
188 yards passing and three
passing touchdowns.
Senior running back Randy
Scott was held to only 47 yards
rushing, but had 92 receiving
yards and one touchdown.
Junior end Jake McElligott
had 86 yards receiving and two
touchdown catches.
The defensive effort was also
led by Swanson who had 29
tackles. Kelly Morgan added 15
and Jacob Taylor chipped in
with 14.
"T h e Cardinals played their
hearts out but the Bulldogs just
wore us out. It was a great
game to watch," said Head
Coach Gregg Rietmann.
Senior running back and the
anchor for the lone defense, Joe
Bacon, was only playing at 50
percent as he was still bothered
by an injury from the Echo
game a few weeks ago.
