EIGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 23, 1996
Willow Creek releases to be increased
Residents living on or near
Willow Creek in Heppner will
see big changes in the creek's
level this week, according to
the Portland District, U.S. Ar
my Corps of Engineers.
Monday, Oct. 21, the Corps
was to increase releases from
Willow Creek Lake from three
cubic feet per second (cfs) to'30
cfs to begin lowering the water
level. The flows are increased
every year at about this time to
lower the lake level so there
will be room to store winter
rain, said hydraulic engineer
Russ Davidson.
On T hursday, O ct. 24,
releases will be increased even
more to test and set a new gage
installed below the confluence
of Willow and Hinton creeks.
For the test, the Corps will in
crease releases to 50 cfs, 75 cfs
and 100 cfs, Davidson said.
When the test shows that the
gage reads water depths and
pressures accurately, the Corps
will return flows to 30 cfs,
where they will stay until mid-
November when the lake is at
the winter flood control level.
Corps hydraulic engineers
and members of The Dalles-
John Day-Willow Creek project
staffs held a public meeting on
Monday, Oct 21 in Heppner, to
discuss Willow Creek Dam
operations and explain the two
major types of flooding asso
ciated with the Willow Creek
watershed.

There were 75 people present for the senior meal on Oct. 16.
Three meals were home delivered. Members of the Lutheran
Church served. The Nutrition Site Committee met following the
meal. Blood pressures were taken before lunch.
The menu for the birthday dinner, Oct. 30, will be beef and
noodles, peas and carrots, salad, bread and cupcakes, which will
be decorated for Halloween. Members of the Mormon Church
will serve. Bob Ridgway will stop by to visit with the seniors.
One table of cards was in play Friday afternoon. Five ladies
watched the movie, "Parenthood" on Sunday evening.
The senior bus will depart Heppner at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct.
25 for the trip to the senior meal site at Hermiston. There are
still a few seats available. Those wishing to go may sign up at
the Senior Center office.
The seniors were saddened by the death of Carl McDaniels.
Their sympathy is extended to Sylvia and the family. Sylvia
recently moved into an apartment at St. Patrick's Center.
Mary ]ean and Ernie McCabe decorated the dining room with
a Halloween motif. They do a good job of decorating for all the
holidays; the seniors appreciate it very much.
Dates to remember: Tuesday and Thursday exercise, 10 a.m.;
Wednesday blood pressures taken, 11 a.m., senior meal, noon;
Friday cards, 2 p.m.; Sunday movie, 7 p.m.
