Heppner’s three net sauads
challenged the lone Cardinals
on Monday, October 21, and
galloped away with all the
wins.
The Fillies varsity set the
tone in the first match,
winning 15-12, 15-13.
In Game One the Fillies
bolted to a quick lead when
the first server, Annie Hisler,
served points one through
nine.
With Hisler supplying the
serves, Lexi Matteson and Lori
Moeller teamed up to control
the net with double blocking
and kills coming from each.
Just when it looked like it was
oing to be over in a hurry, the
illies went into a scoring lull,
allowing the Cardinals to peck
away at the point spread and
come within one point o f the
Fillies, making the score 13-
12 .
At that point the Fillies took
a firm grip on the reins and
won the first game, 15-12.
Game Two, the Fillies were
leading 14-8 when lone’s tall
front line went to work,
creating hard fought rallies and
earning a few kills for the
Cards. Soon the scoreboard
read 14-13.
Two servers later, the Fillies
went on to nip the Cardinals
15-13, winning the game and
the match.
The varsity Fillies looked as
if they were having fun as they
played a steady, relaxed game
that featured accurate setting,
balanced attacks and 86
percent team serving for the
match. These Fillies have
their ears perked up and are
ready to advance through the
district tournament.
The Filly JV’s finished their
successful season with a win
over the Cardinals, 15-10, 15-
3.
Game One was primarily
jlayed out by JV’s from the
unior class, and they looked
ike they were enjoying
themselves, with 83 percent
team serving success, Melissa
Cutsforth’s setting and kills
coming from Josie Proctor,
Jayme Hansen, Katie Nichols
and Linsey Ropp.
Game Two was tied at threes
when Jaci Hughes lead the
Fillies into a scoring stampede,
scoring points four through 10
with 3 aces, and Brooke Boyer
assisting with two kills at the
net.
At that point Nichols was
subbed in for Hughes, scoring
point 11 with an ace and point
12 .
Then Jayme Perez
replaced
Nichols
and
proceeded to score point 13
with help from a Casey
Ingraham Kill, point 14 with a
kill from Jessica VanWinkle
and aced the game point to
win the second game, 15-3.

by Molly Rhea_____________ that were all marked as kills.
The Heppner varsity netters
again met in a triple header
with Stanfield and Umatilla on
Saturday, October 19, in
Stanfield. The Fillies took the
bit in their teeth and won both
matches decisively.
The first match pitted the
Heppner Fillies against the
Stanfield Tigers. Game One
started out slow as the Fillies
struggled at the service line,
taking two and a half rotations
to post the win, 15-6.
Stats from the match show
Annie Hisler as the big hitter
with five for eight hits and
four kills, and 3/3 on the dinks
with two kills. Lexi Matteson
was six for sevem hits with
three kills.
Lori Moeller,
Amber Peck and Mindy
Binchus all had three kills in
the match.
In Game Two the Fillies
took control o f the reins and
won the game quickly, 15-5.
Heppner’s second match o f
the day was against the
Umatilla Vikings who were 5-
4 in league play. The Fillies
cantered out to a 8-1 lead in
game one and finished off with
an easy 15-2 win.
Game Two was a little closer,
but the Fillies led the entire
game and easily sunk the
Viking ship, winning the game
and the match 15-7.
By the look of the stat sheet,
Lexi Matteson was definitely
feeling her oats with 5/5 hits
Annie Hisler was also 5/5 with
two kills and Lori Moeller
had 4/5 with three kills, and a
very strong performance in the
back row. Mindy Binchus was
5/5 with one kill and 4 blocks,
two o f these blocks resulted in
stuffs. Stormy Howard and
Hisler kept the Vikings
guessing
with
several
successful dinks each.
These games wrap up regular
season play for the Fillies, as
they finish the season with a
10-2 league record. Unless the
Pilot Rock Rockets can pull
off an upset over the Weston-
McEwen
Tiger-Scots on
Tuesday, October 22, the
Fillies will be playing at the
District
Tournament
in
Stanfield on Saturday, October
26. If Weston McEwen loses
to Pilot Rock, Heppner and
Weston-McEwen would have
a play off on Thursday,
October 24, for the CBC
District Championship. The
first place team rides a Bye
into the regional playoffs on
November 2.
District tournament play pits
the team in second place
against the fifth place team,
and the third place team
against the fourth. Then the
winners o f those matches play
to see who will advance to the
regional tournament as the
second place team from the
CBC.

18. They were able to pick an
extra match and came up the
easy winner, 15-10, 15-13.
The C ’s put out consistent
effort with 86 percent serving
success for the two games.
One hundred percent servers
for the match were Stephanie
Clough, Laurie Michael, Amy
Papineau, Macy Rhea, Trisha
Adams, Amy Drake and
Jaylene Papineau.
Drake had several blocks,
hits and kills at the net, with
Rhea also turning in a strong
net performance.

team. Her young Filly squad
has the talent and the
determination to win, and they
usually take their best of three
matches in two games. Hisler
worked each girl into every
match, sometimes resorting to
“platooning” in as many as
five, substitutes at a time.
With this type o f coaching
style these girls have learned
the meaning o f teamwork.
The Fillies C-team capped
the night by taking it to the
Cardinal C ’s 15-4, 15-6.
Game One saw the Heppner
C ’s achieving only 75 percent
serving success, but making up
for it in aggressive net play
with kills coming from Ashley
Ropp, Trisha Adams, Amy
Drake and Allison Sykes.
Game Two, the C ’s seem to
ell, serving 91 percent with
Drake again scoring kills and
slocking hits as the Filly C’s
won easily.
The C-team has one game
remaining as they will be
traveling to Boardman on
Thursday, October 24, to take
on the Riverside C ’s.

OPEN LETTER TO BOB RIDGWAY
Wednesday night you & I were in Heppner appearing at the Heppner Chamber of Commerce
Candidate's Forum. You smiled, shook my hand & visited with me. Generally you acted as if you
were a friend. I spoke to those in attendance first. Among other things I told them that I had past
experience as a municipal court judge pro tern. You then spoke of your experience. You never said
a word about your opinion of my experience.
After the meeting, your campaign worker & I chatted about how nice it had been to
maintain a high level campaign. She commented that it was important that we continue to be civil
throughout the campaign.
Imagine my surprise on Thursday to read your letter to the voters in the East Oregonion
about how offended & angry you were. Those are awfully strong words.
You say I lied in an advertisement about having experience as a municipal court judge. I
haven't hidden my experience. As you know, I said in the voter's pamphlet that I was a municipal
court judge pro tern in The Dalles in 197 5-76. I don't recall the title "deputy city recorder”.
Perhaps the city used it. The effect was the same. I served as a pro tern judge.
The extent of my experience has not been a secret. When in The Dalles, I put on the judge's
robe & walked into the courtroom. I presided over trials, sentenced defendants and performed
marriages. W e both know, however, that while municipal court plays an important role in
enforcing city ordinances, the simplicity of municipal court is so far removed from the
complexities of Circuit Court that the only real similarities are the rituals and the robes.
At the start of the campaign, my committee asked for the support of many people, including
fellow attorneys. As you and I both know, that request for support is both legal and ethical.
Let's return to a positive campaign.
Sincerely,
?
