Heppner Fillies down Pilot Rock Rockets Heppner Fillies play in triple-header
by Molly Rhea
Thursday, October 10, the
three Filly teams rode over
Franklin Grade to face off with
the Pilot Rock netters.
The C-team started off the
evening o f competition by
beating the Rocket C-squad,
10-15, 15-10, 16-14.
The Heppner C ’s let Game
One slip away and looked to
be losing Game Two after
allowing the Rockets' first
server to score eight points
before committing a service
error and allowing Heppner a
side out.
The young Fillies were
trailing 4-10 when Jaylene
Papineau stepped up and
scored eight points for the
Fillies. The C 's used this
momentum as they went on to
win the second game, 15-10.
Game Three was exciting
with no clear leader until the
C ’s pulled it off, 16-14. Leah
Denton put out consistent
effort behind the line and on
the floor. Amy Papineau and
Amy Drake both had strong
games at the net.
“The girls are playing with
enthusiasm and are beginning
to turn up their intensity." said
Coach Dana Reid. “We just
need to keep working on the
basics."
The Heppner JV’s earned yet
another hash mark in their win
column, beating the Pilot Rock
JV ’s, 15-13 15-4.
Game One was close with the
score tied at point 10. Heppner
then pulled ahead. 13-10. only
to see the Rockets tie it up
again at 13. Kim Pointer's
serves finally put the game in
the bag, 15-13.
Game Two the JV Fillies led
the entire game and. with
strong play coming from all 15
players, effectively defueled
the Rockets.
The JV ’s served 84 percent
for the two game match.
Behind the 100 percent
service honors were top server
Kim Pointer, serving 9/9 for
nine points, Brooke Boyer,
8/8, Kathleen Greenup. Jamie
Perez, Linsey Ropp, Jayme
Hansen and Katie Nichols.
“Setting the pace" were floor
leaders Boyer and Melissa
Cutsforth. Top net players
with
strong
Kitting
performances were Casey
Ingraham, 9-10 with 4 kills,
Brooke Boyer 9-9, 3 kills,
followed
by
Jessica
Van Winkle, Jayme Hansen
and Kim Pointer for the night.
Although it certainly didn't
die
ome easily, the Varsity Filli
come
Fillies
were able to jettison the Pilot
Rock Rockets, winning in
three games, 15-5, 14-16, 15-
JO.
In Game One the Rockets
looked as though they were
suffering from jet lag as the
Fillies whipped up on them
15-5. Annie Hisler was out in
force, placing sets and making
several kills at the net. Stormy
Howard, sharing the setting
duties with Hisler, also had a
great game at the net, as did
Traci Dickenson. Lori Moeller
and Mindy Binchus.
Starting with a slightly
different rotation Game Two,
the Rockets caught the Fillies
grazing and picked up an early
lead. The Fillies demonstrated
their ability to make things
happen at the net with kills on
hits or dinks to help score or
cause Heppner side outs
coming from Amber Peck,
Annie Hisler. Lori Moeller and
Mindy Binchus.
Moeller
cranked in a couple o f back
row hits which always seem to
take the opposition
by
surprise. Moeller and Binchus
also teamed up for double
blocking.
In spite of all this great stuff
iting, the Rockets, led by
r hvans, overcame the
Heppner squad to win the
second game, 14-16.
Game Three the Rockets
were almost ready to celebrate.
After more than a full rotation
they led 9-2. At that point
Stormy Howard forced the
side out with a tip. Then Lori
Moeller, behind strong team
play, started a Filly stampede
when she scored points three
though 13. This abrupt lead
change was just too much for
the Rockets and the Fillies
went on to win, 15-10.
The next league game for the
Fillies will be on Thursday,
October 17, when all three
Filly teams meet up with
Weston-McEwen
on
the
Fillies' home court.
This
promises to be the game o f the
week in CBC action.
This second match up with
Weston-McEwen is a crucial
game for the Fillies. As o f this
writing, Weston-McEwen’s
only league loss so far this
season came from Heppner.
Although
Heppner
and
Weston-McEwen
possess
identical win-loss records, the
Fillies occupy the top spot in
the
CBC
standings
by
defeating the Tiger-Scots in
their
previous
meeting.
Heppner fans will not want to
miss this opportunity to cheer
on this spirited Filly squad.

Heppner net fans were treated
to a triple header on Tuesday,
October 8, when Umatilla and
Stanfield came to town to
compete in CBC varsity
volleyball action.
The
competition started off with
the Heppner Fillies downing
the Umatilla Viking netters in
a long match, 15-7, 15-17, lb-
14.
Game One was close as the
Fillies struggled with errors.
Umatilla’s Sheil Kadya’s hits
gave the Fillies fits as she was
able to cause side out or points
for the Vikings. Then midway
through the game Mindy
Binchus went behind the
service line to score points 9-
14. After several more side
outs the Fillies won the first
third of the match, 15-7.
Game Two produced
improved passing along with
ferocious attacks and several
intense rallies. Just as the
Filly fans thought the Viking
ship was swamped, with
Heppner
leading
14-10,
Umatilla battled back to take
the game 15-17.
In Game Three against
Umatilla, the Fillies had to

Fillies make good showing at Imbler
reach down and grit out the
win. It looked as though the
Vikings were going to sail
away with the match wjth a
14-10 lead, when the Fillies
pulled it together and scored
the points necessary to put this
none too pretty win in the
bam.
Although the Umatilla match
wasn’t one of the Fillies better
efforts, there were plenty of
positives that deserve noting.
The stats reveal that scrappy
Annie Hisler was successful in
11 of 11 hits for five kills. Jill
Barber, with two kills, and
Lori Moeller tallied up 15 hits
for 17 attempts with three
kills. Traci Dickenson (16/16)
and Lexi Matteson (2/2) were
100 percent from the service
line.
The second match o f the
night,
Umatilla
quickly
downed Stanfield, 15-9, 15-2.
The night was capped off
with the Heppner netters
playing Stanfield. The Fillies
easily caged the Tigers in two
ames, 15-9, 15-2. Again
raci Dickenson’s serving was
a perfect 10/10 with two aces.
Amber Peck 4/4 and Jessica
VanWinkle 3/3 were all 100
ercent at the service line.
exi Matteson had strong net
games, blocking two serves
and successfully hitting seven
for eight with four kills. Lori
Moeller, the Fillies primary
“go-to” girl, hit 12 for 13.
Coach Terri Gentry was
pleased with the two wins.
“The team needs to 'spark' up a
Saturday, October 12, the
varsity volleyball team found
themselves in Imbler playing
in an eleven team tournament.
The Fillies played tough and
made a good showing.
Starting at 8 am the Fillies
played each team in their pool
one game with rally scoring.
In pool play Heppner defeated
Imbler 15-13, Nyssa 15-9,
Pine Eagle 15-6, and Union
15-9, losing only to Wallowa
13-15. With Heppner. Imbler
and Wallowa sharing identical
win/ loss records o f 4-1, the
bracket placing was decided
the Fillies against U m atilla
little bit to win our next league
matches,” said Genty. “I know
these girls can do it.”
The Filly Girls might have
looked a little ragged on this
outing, but they got the job
done, and remain at the top of
the CBC heap. As league
action is completed within the
next couple o f weeks, the
Fillies are striving to improve
on their consistency. This
team is showing their ability to
play as a team and win ball
games.
