There were 91 people present for the senior meal Sept. 11, and
four meals were home delivered. Members of the Catholic Church
served. Irene Anhom won the free meal ticket.
Gordon Smith, candidate for the U.S. Senate, had dinner with
the seniors and visited afterwards in the sitting room. Jane
Rawlins gave a poetry reading from a Gilbert and Sullivan pro
duction during the meal. Blood pressures were taken before the
meal. The Senior Board met at 1 p.m.
The menu for the birthday dinner W ednesday Sept. 25 will
be chicken and rice casserole, peas^fruit salad, rolls and birth
day cake. Members of the Baptist Church will serve.
The bus did not go to the Hermiston meal site Thursday, Sept.
12, as driver Ed Baker had car trouble on the way in and it wasn't
possible to get another driver on short notice.
The bus is scheduled to go to Hardman, Saturday, Sept. 28,
so anyone wishing to go to the oyster feed should sign up i f t \
the Senior Center office as soon as possible. The bus leaves at
3:30 p.m.
One table of pinochle was play Friday afternoon. Six seniors
enjoyed the movie, "The C ure," Sunday evening.
Not enough people signed up for the trip to the Hermiston
meal site to take the bus Monday, so a few went by car to the

Heppner Fillies do w ell in
Let'r'Buck tourney
The Fillies' varsity volleyball
team played well at the
L et'r'B uck tournam ent in
Pendleton, Friday, Sept. 13. In
this tournament, each team
played two games against the
other teams in their pool, the
first team to 12 being the
winner.
Heppner won their first two
games against the Pendleton B-
team, 12-1, 12-2, with Jessica
Van Winkle scoring 11 straight
points to clinch the win.
Hepner went on to split with
the La Grande JVs, 12-14, 12-5
and Baker City's JV squad,
11-13, 12-5.
Achieving first place status in
pool play, the Fillies advanced
to bracket play, where the scor
ing was slightly altered. In
bracket play, each team plays
one game to 15, with a scoring
cap of 17 points. Losers in the
first round of play are elimina
ted.
The first round bracket mat
ched the Fillies with the
Lewiston JVs. The battle was
hard fought, but the Heppner
squad was finally overcome
16-17.
Team serving percentage for
the day was 116 of 145, for 80
percent. Amber Peck (9 of 9)
and Jaci Hughes (2 of 2) led the
serving percentage with 100
percent success, followed by
Van Winkle (11 of 13), 85 per
cent, and Annie Hisler (29 of
35), 83 percent.

and Jill Barber.
Coach Terri Gentry says she
likes what she has seen in her
Fillies so far this year. "These
tournaments have been really
helpful. They (the tourna
ments) last all day, the girls get
tired and that is when I can see
what we need to work on.
When fatigue sets in, the mis
takes are usually a result of a
weakness. These girls are
quick, strong and work well
together-I expect us to do well
this year."
The Fillies saw their first
league action on Tuesday,
Sept. 17, as the varsity and JV
teams traveled to Wahtonka.
Thursday, Sept. 19, finds all
of the volleyball teams on the
home court for league play
against Pilot Rock. The games
start at 5 p.m., with the C-team
playing first, followed by the
JVs and varsity.
On Friday, Sept. 20, the C-
team will play Weston-Mc-
Ewen's C-team in Heppner at
5 p.m., prior to the varsity foot
ball match-up.
On Saturday, Sept. 21,
Heppner is hosting a JV tour
nament, which will include
both Heppner's JV and C-team,
as well as six other teams. Play
begins Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
and will last most of the day.

The Yoncalla Eagles were
sw ep t this w eekend by
Heppner at the junior high, JV,
and varsity levels. The junior
high started out the day with
a victory over the Eagles. The
game was capped by an in
terception returned for a
touchdown by seventh grader
Kelly Paullus.
The JV team only played two
quarters, but that was all they
needed to beat Yoncalla 14-6.
Junior varsity coach Les
Payne had a good idea that the
team would be strong by their
size and their attitudes. Payne
also said that they would have
a good season if they could beat
rivals Weston-McEwen this
coming Monday.
Booster Club plans tailgate party
The Heppner Booster Club
will hold a tailgate party for the
Heppner vs. Weston-McEwen
football game on Friday, Sept.
20, at the Morrow County Fair
grounds from 5-7 p.m.
Dinner will include barbe-
cued hamburgers, hot dogs,
chili burgers or chili dogs, with
chips, brownies and a drink.
Cost for a hamburger or
cheeseburger meal is $3; chili
burger meal, $4; chili dog meal,
$2.50; and hot dog meal, $1.50.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.

it.

will affect eight Eastern Oregon
